Retired Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter, the ascetic bachelor and New Hampshire Republican who became a darling of liberals during his nearly 20 years on the bench, has died. He was 85.

Souter died Thursday at his home in New Hampshire, the Supreme Court said in a statement Friday.

He retired from the court in June 2009, giving President Barack Obama his first Supreme Court vacancy to fill. Obama chose Sonia Sotomayor, the court’s first Latina justice.

Souter was appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1990. He was a reliably liberal vote on abortion, church-state relations, freedom of expression and the accessibility of federal courts.

I'll always remember Souter as the dude who allegedly was mugged on a Washington DC street while jogging one night back in 2004.

That's his legacy, to me. LOL.

I’ve always wondered why it is when a Republican President picks someone for the Supreme Court, they end up straying off ideologically - but when a Democrat President picks someone, they stay true to their cause?

In part it's because they insist on picking people from the same overrated liberal Ivy law schools. Liberal faculty teaching liberal legal ideology. Going against that is probably a lonely road, and gets you 'shunned'.

One of GHWB’s 2 big mistakes with the other being breaking his no new taxes pledge.

yep, and it goes against nature, because most people get more conservative as they age.

My personal belief is that the Bush’s KNEW all these judges were liberals, because the BUSH’s were closet liberals. They simply lied to use to get elected.

With this clown, his homosexuality was closeted but obvious. He should have been rejected.

Yes to the whole cocktail circuit in DC being a part of it. Part is they and their spouses get lucrative summer gigs teaching abroad for various law schools or like ACB get sweetheart publishing deals despite the fact that few have any interest in their books.

Of course you don’t tend to get the above if you don’t toe the Leftist line.

Sandra was much brighter, but overall she was a abortion-loving disaster.

The problem with much of the Federal Government is that it’s centralized in one of the most corrupt places on earth, and for that reason alone it should be decentralized and spread out all across this great land.

But NEVER does a Dem President appoint a justice who turns out to be reliably conservative.

Byron White (JFK) wasn't so bad. Besides joining Rehnquist writing the better dissent in Roe v. Wade the fruit Gore Vidal singled him for very bad treatment in an awful book, comparing him to women's private parts.

Was Souter’s rulings prior to nomination conservative or were they activist rulings?
He could have been a sleeper.

I blame it on the educational system.

I blame it for lots of reasons. School Choice is FINALLY happening in states like Texas, Tennessee and a few others. This will grow exponentially soon.

Gorsuch has been pretty good and he doesn’t seem to disagree on really fundamental constitutional issues.

Kavanaugh is more good than bad. I also don’t blame Trump for this pick because him picking Kavanaugh was Kennedy’s condition for retiring (Kavanaugh had been his clerk). If Trump had said no, Kennedy could have retired during Biden’s term and then we’d have gotten somebody so much worse.

ACB was an awful choice. Trump listened to the Turtle and was still trying to cooperate with the RINOs on some things. Soon after they stabbed him and us in the back with their complicity in the steal and from that point on, we’ve all understood that RINOs just need to be crushed - not compromised with. Still, as bad as ACB is, she’s still much better than RBG.

Please provide evidence that David Souter ever "strayed" from any of his deeply held lifelong liberal priors.

If a Republican President nominates a liberal, don't complain that that liberal is "straying" or "betraying" principles he or she never held.

We could always count on Souter to get it wrong.
