Nearly all eggs sold in Michigan starting before the New Year must come from cage-free birds, even as egg prices continue to climb.

Michigan lawmakers modified the Animal Industry Act in 2019, requiring shell eggs from chickens, ducks and other fowl, sold in the state to be from cage-free housing systems, starting Dec. 31, 2024.

My chickens give me eggs everyday. I will not even eat those store bought eggs anymore.

Years ago on Mork & Mindy, Robin Williams asked Mindy why she was eating chicken placentas.

Oh they would have a fit. They would call the Police Chief, The Indian Chief, The Fire Chief, and The Highway Patrol demanding that they get the chickens off their grass.

I used to collect truckloads of pumpkins after Halloween and feed them to my 200 chickens all winter. The pile would freeze so they ended up with frozen pumpkin pops, but they love them.

Had the brightest orange yolks ever.

It’s just a shame we need government busybodies to insert themselves into the matter. There are ways to adjust through simple communication outside of legislation.

It’s true we disagree. I believe human life is good. You hate human life. It’s why you jumped on that thread to celebrate the death of an old man in a hunting accident.
Laws like this will decrease the number of chickens. That’s less life but you’re OK with that.

Beware anyone that equates animals with people because they also equate people with animals. The Nazis loved animals as much as people and they slaughtered millions of people in stockyards called concentration camps.

I have had chickens for 10 years. Very interesting creatures.

I want cheap eggs. Given that chickens will lay eggs even when they're in “cages” says to me that they're OK with their accommodations. If you want to pay more for “cage free” then be my guest. But just be aware that “cage free” is,just like “organic”,a scam designed to separate people from more of their money.

Yes, the Nazi’s were into animals rights. Animal rights people don’t really believe people are equal though. They are OK with animals eating other animals but not with people eating or associating with any other animal. As I said in the previous post only humans are profane (and any animals associated with them ie. domestic animals should be extinct)
This like the Nazi’s is a death cult.

I'm far from a tree-hugging hippie but I'd rather pay a little extra and get my eggs from a farm where the chickens get a better quality of life. I also find them tastier and by all accounts, they are more nutritious.

I typically pay $5/dozen for roadside/farmstand pastured eggs and I find that a decent price. I eat three eggs a day for breakfast so that comes to about $1.25 a day.

Much cheaper than an Egg McMuffin!

I'm sympathetic. The law isn't requiring chickens roam freely. It requires the hen be able to stand - at least, that is how I read the article. I'd pay more in order to allow a hen enough room to stand up. And yes, my family & I eat a LOT of eggs.

OK,fair enough. My guess is that you're also willing to pay $10 a pound for "organic" ground beef when right next to it there's perfectly good ground beef that's not "organic" selling for $4 a pound.

I wish I had the kind of money that you're willing to throw around at the supermarket. Maybe you're not paying your fair share of taxes! ;-)

This is sort of pointless compassion. Chickens are among the dumbest of vertebrate animals. They likely don’t even know or care how they are being treated.

Say hello to $1 per egg prices, or higher in the not too distant future. Pork producers are also being regulated to the point that prices for pork, the last bastion of low priced meat, will skyrocket soon too. California has rules that each pig must have 25 feet of space to wander in. (Many producers keep them tightly together while overnight, but allow them to roam during the day in larger pens, but apparently California wants them to have 25 feet at night too. This will drive up the cost tremendously.

You jump to conclusions irrationally. Introspection can help that.

No reason to confine a hen to a small cage for life when God made them to roam
