Bob Good to Resign as House Freedom Caucus Chair
The Daily Signal ^ | September 13, 2024 | Bradley Devlin

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., will resign shortly as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of the chamber’s most conservative members, after losing his primary election.

Good told reporters Monday that he had submitted his resignation to the caucus board, but didn’t provide a timeline for his official resignation as chairman.

Sources familiar with the matter, however, told news outlets that Good’s resignation would become official by week’s end.

In June, Good lost his primary in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District to his challenger, state Sen. John McGuire.

McGuire had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump working on his behalf, as well as the political apparatus of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

The challenger had a 374-vote lead over Good before the primary headed for a recount. That recount solidified McGuire’s victory in early August.

Good attempted to fend off the influence of Trump and McCarthy in the primary. He found himself on Trump’s bad side because, before endorsing Trump, he supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential primary. Good was also one of the House members who voted to oust McCarthy as speaker last October.

Does anybody in Virginia know more about the leanings of State Senator McGuire? The fact that Kevin McCarthy’s supporters backed him is a red flag to me, but that is merely guilt by association. I have no idea whether McGuire would be a RINO or a conservative, should he win the election.

Having no idea whether a Repub will be a RINO or a true conservative is harder than it should be. You seldom can tell.

Don’t know Bob Good’s record in the House but the endorsement of McGuire by 2 big time Repubs named Trump and McCarthy makes me wonder WHY both endorsers wanted him instead of the incumbent, Good.

I’m not saying automatically accept it, no worries, I’m saying wonder what the two, Trump and McCarthy, saw in the race to prompt their endorsement of the challenger not the incumbent.

I wonder THAT, first and foremost.

I don’t know, don’t claim to know.

However, I don’t automatically WORRY that either man’s reason - Trump or McCarthy - spells trouble that they could have endorsed a RINO because they want a RINO there.

That doesn’t make sense to me.

Further, that district’s voters did not have to vote accordingly. But the voter’s did so.

Therefore, it doesn’t worry me.

Just my thoughts. I don’t automatically freak out if McCarthy’s name is attached to something. I have to know more than that.

But that’s just me...

Kevin McCarthy was probably doing it out of revenge.

I live in his district.

President Trump endorsed McGuire because Bob Good supported Ron DeSantis early in the year.

Kevin McCarthy endorsed McGuire because he was pissed at Good for working to oust him as Speaker.

Is McGuire a RINO? I don’t think so, but he sure is ambitious. He got elected to the VA State Senate, but announced he was running for Congress before he even took his seat in the Senate.

McGuire should win the general election. This is a Rebublican district.

You can have all the best policies in the world, but if you are bad at politics you won’t last long in office.

Good supported the right ideas, but the wrong people at the wrong time.

Bingo! In my opinion, your line of reasoning reveals the kind of humility and wisdom that restrains raw emotion and serves the pursuit of truth. Knowing what we don't know is a big step to determining what we can know. "Ready, Fire! Aim." responses tend to close minds and sidetrack effective inquiry. Regards... AAM

Any Republican in public office who supported Ron DeSantis in the 2024 primary should be considered too damned retarded to dress himself in the morning — let alone serve in Congress.

Just as elections have consequences, so too do endorsements. If you didn’t want Trump as the republican nominee, then don’t complain that your guy lost so bad he had to drop out and support Trump.

Anyone who supported anti-Trump candidates deserves the result of Trumps wrath.

At best it demonstrates their tone deafness and inability to recognize what time it is (historically speaking). At worst, it demonstrates a desire to maintain Uniparty control over government and American society in general.

Agreed. We can’t afford business as usual from our Republican representatives. If a second Trump term is to succeed, every Republican is going to have to unite behind Trump. Anyone who wants to slow walk the reforms that are needed needs to be openly ostracized.

According to the article, Good both supported DeSantis for President (Trump) and supported ousting McCarthy from the speakership (McCarthy).
