If there were any doubt whether Vice President Kamala Harris has transformed this year’s presidential election, Saturday morning’s latest New York Times/Siena College polls put it to rest.
In the first Times/Siena College swing state polls since her entry into the race, Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 4 points each in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin among likely voters. It’s a major shift from previous Times/Siena polls, which found Trump leading Harris and President Joe Biden by an average of 1 or 2 points each across the same three states.
Sometimes, it can be hard to explain why polls shift from week to week or month to month. In today’s polarized politics, it can even be hard to explain why voters ever shift at all. In this case, it’s easy: Harris’ entry into the race has upended the fundamentals of this election.
Until now, the basic dynamic of the race was driven by Biden’s unpopularity. It prevented Democrats from running their usual strategy against Trump and his MAGA allies: Make an election a referendum on Trump by running a broadly acceptable candidate. Millions of voters were left with an agonizing choice between two candidates they disliked.
With Harris riding an extraordinary wave of momentum at the top of the ticket, at least for now, the usual political dynamic of the Trump era has been restored. In the poll, at least 49% of likely voters in each of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin say they have a favorable view of her, a level neither Harris nor Biden obtained in any previous Times/Siena poll this cycle.
Whether this will last is an entirely different question.

These BS polls could backfire. It may motivate more Trump voters. There are lot of “couch potato conservatives” that need to get off their asses. OTOH, it could just be setting up the steal.
I’m one of them. Before Harris Walz I was a patriotic Trump supporter. Now with the flashy negro-american and vivacious Tampon Tim, I’m gonna switch my vote. I,now, love communism, open borders, drag queens with my kids, and giving up all of my guns!(sarc)
Ryan Gidursky has some interesting points on this bizarre “poll” including that they have the white vote tied, they have Trump winning white working class voters only by 13 instead of the usual 30 and they seem to tilt toward liberal white women. That said, I still believe it important for Trump and Vance to pound these two hard leftists on policy and not personality.
Why would it change anything? Joe Biden was as sharp as a tack and as Joe Scarborough said in all the years he knew him this was the best Joe Biden ever. You can’t expect Kamala to get more than Joe’s epic 81 million votes. Unless of course the NY Times is gaslighting everyone. They would never do that would they?
Polls are designed to manipulate public opinion, not measure it.
The same kid of fear was all around FR until Biden’s debate downfall. At least Biden had the dementia excuse. Harris won’t have that.
Harris hasn’t done jack! The media and their phony polls are doing the heavy lifting to “change the race.”
Remember too that polls are being used to depress our turnout and our enthusiasm. Propaganda in so many ways. There is a reason Team Cackles, the Democrats and media only want one debate. The more you see and hear what a total lightweight Kamala Harris is the more voters on the fence will be hesitant to vote for her. In the debate Trump just needs to remain cool and confident, which he will be, and present his vision for the country. Harris has to be forced to defend the Biden administration and there isn’t enough word salad she can spew out to make people confident of her being president!
These headlines are meant to gaslight and become a self fulfilling prophecy.
