The shooter who opened fire on Donald Trump was rejected from his school’s rifle club over his poor aim, his former classmates have said.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was identified by the FBI as the man who tried to assassinate the former president at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.
Classmates at Bethel Park High, where the shooter graduated from in 2022, described him as an intelligent student with few friends.

He used an aimpoint type red dot. Thankfully he didn’t have a variable scope with parallax.
Well, since he left high school he clearly demonstrated that he had received sufficient instruction, training and range time to miss his target at 130 yards in a 10 mph cross-wind by millimeters.
He must have been an apt pupil.
I find this claim hard to believe. I was on my high school rifle team, also shot CMP at the same time. Rifle team took everyone who had the desire to be on the team. Our coach used to assign poor shooters with the best as a way to help them to become better. He always taught us that the point of the team was to raise the skills up of everyone on it.
FWIW...the roof had to be hot to the touch from the sun beating down on it all day.
I call BS on this article.
Let’s not be stupid. He was not a bad shot. Trump leaned forward and turned otherwise the rear of his head would have evaporated.
Clean head shot avoided by Providence.
The boy did that after being startled by a cop climbing the ladder behind him and scaring him off, then recovered, took aim and damn near killed the President.
SO call that poor if you want, but you’d have to describe September Eleventh as thrown together.
No, that kid was on a mission and he barely failed.
I am surprised just to hear of a high school shooting team. I was on one back in the 70’s but i didnt think there were any remaining after so many decades of anti-gun propaganda.
Any decent shot can put it within 1 moa. However, if you know in a few seconds your brains were going to be blown out I am not sure it is real easy to hold the gun steady.
I call BS on all of it. I'm not buying it. A person who is reserved in nature, successful in school, has no drug abuse, and shows great empathy for old people and others around them, doesn't wake up one day and decide to go kill an ex-president. No boasting, no posting, and no motive. This whole thing has the stink of the deep state all over it.
he was a freshman when that happened.
perfect candidate for the cia.
they could’ve trained him, spun him up, and set him loose.
I agree. Assuming he was the shooter, he had help and wasn’t acting alone. Further, it was reported a local cop climbed up there and confronted him but was scared off when he pointed his rifle at him, then he fired a few moments later, so he was rushed. The shooter had his elevation exactly right, and DJT turned his head a split second before the shot.
I’m not even convinced he was the shooter, though he certainly was the patsy. The SS sniper team that took out the alleged shooter returned fire barely a second after he took his shots… that is almost unbelievably quick to acquire a target and respond. Almost as if they were waiting for him to take his shots then eliminate him.
I smell a rat… Something is rotten in Denmark.
A “registered Republican” is another thing the media is pushing. Pennsylvania is one of 10 states with a closed primary system. Along with donating to ActBlue, that tells me he was anti-Trump enough to want to register as a Republican just to vote against him in the primary.
My son was making 200 yard open sight shots with an M1 Garand at 13 years old, from prone unsupported.
You are correct, it’s not a great distance.
What I want to know is how easy it is to face down a cop climbing on the roof, then proceed back to your position and immediately aim, fire and hit your target?
Cause that’s the version we’re hearing now.
My mistake; it was the University of Maryland team headed by Arthur Cook that beat the U. S. Naval Academy rifle team. Not his high school team. Sorry about my memory, it’s been a long time ago.
