The shooter who opened fire on Donald Trump was rejected from his school’s rifle club over his poor aim, his former classmates have said.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was identified by the FBI as the man who tried to assassinate the former president at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.
Classmates at Bethel Park High, where the shooter graduated from in 2022, described him as an intelligent student with few friends.

Well, one reason he may have been recruited for the job is he has rifle team on his resume.
Dead men tell no tales.
now he is a dead shot... too soon?
not soon enough.
Well, at least he doesn’t have head aches anymore.
There is no mention on the High School’s website of a rifle club, so we should consider this bogus.
What was the last thing that went through his mind? A .300 round.....

At 140 yards, an assassin doesn’t need to be a marksman.
This is a rehash of another story written by a group of 4 writers...AP, as I recall. The guy (now head of the rifle team) who claimed the shooter wasn’t allowed on the team because the shooter was a terrible shot is just 15 or 16 now, and wouldn’t have known the shooter back when the guy was in high school years ago...probably wasn’t even on the team at the time.
Clearly the shooter wasn’t a bad shot considering in the heat of the moment he was able to graze Trump immediately after being interrupted by the cop coming up the ladder, knowing he had been discovered. But then, he had had 4 years to practice, I guess.
“At 140 yards, an assassin doesn’t need to be a marksman.”
This “140 yards” statement is absolute and pure garbage.
To hit the intended target within acceptable expected deviation, marksmanship is required (knowing your weapon, sight system, ammunition, distance, and weather, and having disciplined yourself through education and practice to minimize the human component in shooting, including the excitement element).
If he could not hit a target at 140 yards with a 5mph crosswind, I’m not surprised they refused to accept him on to their team.
I find his “misses” detailed in the article to be a fabrication or at least an exaggeration. Perhaps a cover up resume being formed?
Had Trump not turned his head at precisely the right moment, it would have been a temple shot.
Not garbage. I spoke to some folks at church yesterday. One was a kid who shoots. The other had served as sergeant in an airborne division. They agreed that 140 yards is not a tremendous distance. Sarge said that he had been trained to hit targets at 300 meters, with iron sights. 140 yards is NBD.
He wasn’t that terrible of a shot. He came within an inch or two of almost killing Trump.
Being a rifle instructor with decades of experience.
I can tell you give me a person with a lot of motivation.
I can instruct them in an hour to be a very good shot at the distance mentioned.
I can also work on the human factor. that is a bit more difficult. With instruction it can be worked on in that hour.
Do high schools even have title clubs anymore ?
I took my adult daughter to the range to teach her to shoot. In one hour she was hitting the inner circle of the target (not the bullseye) from 150 yards. She had never shot a rifle before.
I, once about thirty years ago, before witnesses put three shots in one hole at 100 yards from the prone position using an M1-Garand. Peep sights. Best shooting I have ever done. Alas it was the sight in phase and did not count.
I have never been able to do that again.
100 yd should have been an easy shot with an AR-15.
