“Denver inadvertantly put the plane into a stall when trying to switch the fuel tank.”

Not NTSB finding.

Wow! I remember seeing that photo from the stack of photos my girlfriend had from the photo lab she printed the photos in. She showed me about 200 5” x 5” photos from that moon landing.

So sad. Rest in peace, Mr. Anders. You were a real hero.

He died. He was 90 years old. What was he doing with a Pilots License at that age?

If you can pass the medical and the Flight Review every two years you can fly. Our chief flying instructor at our club is in his early 80s. I am 76 and had to hang it up as an instructor due to heart problems. I am still very competent but if the heart went wrong in the air I could kill my student, myself, and wreck a perfectly good aircraft. Oddly I can still do flight reviews with a current pilot. He is Pilot in Command. I can no longer instruct.

Per the video the aircraft went in at about 80 degrees of vertical. There are few explanations for this.

1. Suicide which is extremely unlikely.
2. Mechanical failure of elevator also somewhat unlikely. If this had failed he would never had gotten airborne. Even if it failed and went to neutral the craft would not have gone in at 80 degrees. Engine failure would not account for this crash.
3. Incapacitation of the pilot that then leaned forward on the stick or yoke. Most probable.

For myself I hope it was simply mechanical failure. I do not think it was.

I remember that.

I didn’t quite recall the astronaut’s names though.

PS

It is not a bad way for an old pilot and astronaut to check out. Doing what you love to the last is pretty damn good. God’s winds will waft your wings and you home.

Correct, however , truth is usually at least harsh as not.

A really MAJOR General. 🙂

Two things came to mind, watching the news reports of Ander’s death in this manner:

Heinlein’s poem “The Green Hills of Earth”.

The song by Kansas “Icarus / Borne on Wings of Steel”.

RIP, General Anders. You were a light we can all hope to at least a little bit emulate.

[Anders, Lovell and Borman circled the Moon for the first time at Christmas Eve 1968 and read from the Bible: “in the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth . . .’]

It was a different America back then. One we shall not see again.

Sadly.

Imagine if some astronauts tried that today.

“Denver inadvertantly put the plane into a stall when trying to switch the fuel tank.” Not NTSB finding.

"The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause of this accident was the pilot's diversion of attention from the operation of the airplane and his inadvertent application of right rudder that resulted in the loss of airplane control while attempting to manipulate the fuel selector handle. Also, the Board determines that the pilot's inadequate preflight planning and preparations, specifically his failure to refuel the airplane, was causal. The Board determines that the builder's decision to locate the unmarked fuel selector handle in a hard-to-access position, unmarked fuel quantity sight gauges, inadequate transition training by the pilot, and his lack of total experience in this type of airplane were factors in this accident."

At 90, you can get disoriented, dizzy or pass out doing rather simple stunts. Even at home, just turning around suddenly, can make a person woozy. Loops in a plane? Oh yeah.
