Shock study shows how 42M recipients spend their food stamps - and they're not buying broccoli

An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.

Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.

Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.

The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.

The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

That would be too much work I guess. The video I saw was of a lady with a shopping cart full of bottled water in the parking lot of a grocery store. She was emptying the bottles one at a time on the ground. She then headed to the bottle return. The guy doing the video was pointing out to her that she was committing fraud and food stamp abuse. She didn’t seem to care.

No...need a list of things they can buy...milk, rice, beans, velveeta, and maybe fresh or frozen vegetables or fruit. That is enough.

From the physical appearance of food stamp buyers at the store, this is 100% true.

Not a shock at all.

Anyone who has watched welfare deadbeats shop knows this has been going on for decades.

I don’t know about that, when I am in line buying hamburg I see a lot of Snap dependents buying top cuts of meat and not just one or two but a shopping cart full. None of them speak English.

Registers at most stores will only process the SNAP money for eligible items.

The other must be paid out of pocket.

I’ve seen it happen in front of me.

SNAP or WIC whatever it is

Nope-if they don’t understand, offer them a 1 hour class on basic nutrition-if they still don’t get with the program, too bad-no more help-learn to cook or starve. And bring back that welfare-to-work program, right now, too-taxpayers are sick and tired of funding fat, lazy and unhealthy-bastante. As a comp case manager, I’ve busted plenty of scammers, and it does not bother me at all to see them get hungry enough to go back to work-I’m a taxpayer, too...

What do you propose for elderly people who may be disabled and have nobody upon whom they can depend?

It isn’t just healthy, able-bodied ‘grifters’ who are on various types of welfare.

A lot of people who live in various big cities are afraid of tap water - some with good reason.

Food stamps for bottled water has to be the worst way to address that problem. It's like subsidizing blood transfusions for actively bleeding knife wounds instead of stitching the wound.

And I would love to see a study of how much SNAP cards are sold (for cash)

I saw an homeless idiot who spent his welfare money on bottled water, emptied all the water bottles onto the ground, so he could take the bottle back for the deposit.

So 95% of that transaction literally wasted on the floor.
