What do you propose for elderly people who may be disabled and have nobody upon whom they can depend?

It isn’t just healthy, able-bodied ‘grifters’ who are on various types of welfare.

I propose what used to be done, instead of just giving an EBT card to anyone who whines enough-before Obama was pres-every case worker/case manager was required to actually check out whether a person really was disabled/unable to work forever or temporarily, what their sources of income-if any-were, etc before they were approved for assistance. That is no longer done most of the time hence you have scammers and drug addicts getting benefits who should either be in rehab or at work.

I’m over 70-I have a military survivor income as well as managing a business that makes some money, I’m healthy and non-disabled, so I obviously do not need benefits and should not get them. If a person my age can’t work and has less than enough to live on and is not a veteran eligible for VA assistance-the amount varies-then they certainly should and do get benefits-that is who those benefits are really for-they are not for the scammers and welfare queens getting them. Maybe I sound mean-but I’ve worked with comp clients, disability and assistance issues for about 30 years-and i can say that only about half the people who ask for food assistance really need/deserve those benefits...
