Shock study shows how 42M recipients spend their food stamps - and they're not buying broccoli

An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.

Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.

Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.

The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.

The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

And we all know it’ll never happen. Ever. Or at least until there is complete societal collapse and our new overlords mandate we speak Mandarin.

Most of the people on SNAP are morbidly obese.

How long can a poor disabled senior live on that diet, and how many times do you think kids would eat it, or anyone.

Along with those who should not be getting aid or who should receive it for a very short time are some food stamp recipients who are feeding kids and some past working capabilities who are on them permanently.

Of course, this comes from a foreign source as none of our domestic news outlets print anything but praise for the thieving 'Rats and the morons/traitors that vote for them.

What is published is how SNAP benefit requiremnts are being loosened so as to create more welfare whores.

Anybody who is surprised by this obviously has never been behind a welfare recipient at the check out line at Walmart.

According to Deep State’s new definition, the morbidly obese suffer from food insecurity, too.

I kid you not.

Check it out.

I noticed two things related to this over the weekend: 1) the man who offered to pay with his EBT if I bought something at the convenience store in exchange for cash, and 2) the candy store now accepts EBT.

Lowering the cost of the $135 BILLION per year program by $27 billion over TEN years is going to “gut” it? That’s only $2.7 billion less per year.

A lot of people who live in various big cities are afraid of tap water - some with good reason.

I’m not going to read about the “cut” (who reads the original article, if you can even find it, on FR?) but I would guess that this is a “budget cut” which means actual spending will still go up year over year just not as much as requested. Said request for as probably pump up in anticipation of a “cut” so this is nothing.

Wake me up when actual spending is cut.

Those cruel Republicans want to gut the program by 2%. Terrible!

“”””Really what else did anyone expect as most of the recipients are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.””””

I don’t know the percentage but a lot are going to be impulsive, uneducated, lower IQ, and to live lives of instant gratification.

When I sold encyclopedias door to door the secret to my high sales was that I chose to hit working/poor class black neighborhoods unlike every employee I hired who wanted to go to the rich neighborhoods.

That is true even in this rural area. Most of us are fit and not overweight. But drive 20 miles to the only real town-less than 900 people-with a small chain grocery store and you might see a really obese woman or two in the aisles/at the checkout with a cart full of deli and bakery stuff, packaged, frozen food, cases of soda, candy, jelly, Nutella, boxes of mac and cheese, instant potatoes, 6-8 loaves of white bread, etc, etc-and she swipes a LoneStar EBT card to pay for it all, as the non-overweight folks in the line give her looks that should knock her to the floor...

In Illinois, food is taxed at 1% and other products are taxed at 6.25%. So if the registers can tell the difference, it would be easy enough to tag SNAP-eligible food items and not allow the card to be used on other items.

Of course, that might create some issues at the of the check-out, when the consumer refuses to reduce the purchase because SNAP is maxed out or they can't cover the non-SNAP product.

Anyone who has stood behind a food stamper in the checkout line is fully aware of the garbage food that is purchased.

My folks owned a grocery store when I was growing up. We stopped accepting food stamps for this and similar reasons. It has always been a scam.

There should be a list of things you can’t buy with food stamps.

No. there should be a much shorter list of things you can buy. Anything with carbonation in it would definitely not be in the list.

I’ve seen some buy nothing but what they can easily sell (e.g. entire cart fulls of Coke only).

I don’t care if they don’t eat healthy! that’s their problem not mine.

It's yours when their medical bills come due.

Do away with SNAP and use money from the farm bill to pay small AMERICAN farmers for a little bit of extra rice, beans, sugar, flour, spam and powdered milk.

Give poor people a voucher for a certain amount of these items each week to be picked up from a government facility. The items would be wrapped in a bright orange and green wrapper to let everyone know that the people eating it are freeloaders.

Nobody starves but nobody gets as much free poison as they want.

This would save us billions, help the poor be healthy and make them put in a little bit of effort for their calories.

Big Ag and major food conglomerates would never allow this though. The people who rule over us hate us.
