Pope Francis: Conservatives Have a ‘Suicidal Attitude’
Breitbart ^ | 05/17/2024 | THOMAS D. WILLIAMS, PH.D.

ROME — Pope Francis told CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell that conservatives are willfully blind and manifest a “suicidal attitude” in their narrowmindedness.

In an interview set to air Sunday on 60 Minutes, the pope asserts that a conservative “is someone who clings to something and does not want to see beyond that. It is a suicidal attitude.”

“One thing is to take tradition into account and consider situations from the past but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box,” he adds.

The Pope addresses his conservative critics in the church.

“Conservative is one who clings to something and does not want to see beyond that. It is a suicidal attitude,” says Pope Francis. This Sunday on 60 Minutes, the Pope sits down with @NorahODonnell. https://t.co/mEN4CWeXMW pic.twitter.com/HPYgVm4kIp

in religion, conservatism is really lukewarmness. better to be hot or cold.

Explain, please, since you are not a conservative, in religion, what is your “hot” and what is your “cold?”

Laodicea was a city whose water had to be piped in.

You see it was by a river fed by two tributaries: one a cool mountain waterway and the other fed by sulphur springs which were warm and (reputed to be) healing.

But by the time they reached they were completely mixed, they tasted awful and were good for nothing.

Christ was essentially telling the church there they tasted like their waters.

This does not describe the church where the Word is taught and which does not taste like the world.

But it does describe well the church that tries to be hip, with it, and which makes alliances with the world which we are elsewher called to come out of.

I’m not about to ditch the Catholic Church because of one bad Pope, any more than I’d ditch America for one bad President (or more). We’ve had them before, and the Church survives, as I hope America will. But we do need to Make Catholicism Great Again, too.

Right is still right and wrong is still wrong no matter what these ‘leaders’ try to change.

I was raised by very devout Catholic parents, even went to Catholic school up thru the 8th grade. I stopped attending Mass when all the pedophilia priests within the church came to light. I think you’re a better person than I am because I judged.

Suicidal attitude? You mean like the Trans community with a 42% suicide rate and 19% (up to 31%) amongst the gay community. Why? Because it’s a mental disorder!!! And this commie Pope supports them——

Yes, we’ve had bad popes before, but not sure we’ve had one with this much audacity, that he thinks he is wiser than 2,000 years of history. I’m not even convinced he is the legitimate pope. Yes, things do change but as my wise grandfather often said, “Everything changes except human nature.” That does not change, and there have always been foolish people who think they are wise. Pope John Paul II and Benedict were wise man. This man, not so much.

The Pope's equating of adherence to traditional doctrine with a "suicidal attitude" is a non-sequitur, as it fails to establish a clear causal link between conservatism and self-destructive behavior.

His dismissal of climate change skeptics as "stupid" is an ad hominem fallacy, as it attacks the character of the skeptics rather than addressing the substance of their arguments.

The article's implication that the Pope's disdain for American conservatives is somehow representative of the broader Catholic Church is a hasty generalization, as it fails to acknowledge the diversity of views and perspectives within the Church.

The Pope's assertion that "ideology replaces faith" among traditional Catholics is a false dichotomy, as it presents an oversimplified choice between ideological rigidity and a more fluid, evolving understanding of doctrine.

And when I point out false catholic teaching here on FR, the radical catholics come out of the woodwork. Either you support this, or, you DON’T. There is no in between

Non-sequitur. A Pope's off-the-cuff ramblings aren't Catholic teaching any more than mine are. If they happen to reflect or contain Catholic teaching, fine, but they aren't magically embued with authority just because they came out of the Pope's mouth.

There is no in between

Sorry, but faithful and obedient Catholics can disagree with the Pope's opinions, particularly the ridiculous ones (like the subject of the OP).
