May 13, 1985 is a day that changed Philadelphia forever.
On that day, police dropped a bomb on the MOVE compound on Osage Avenue in West Philadelphia, near Cobbs Creek, leaving 11 people, including children, dead. The ensuing fire destroyed the neighborhood and left decades of scars for everyone involved.
The armed confrontation between Philadelphia authorities and the radical group MOVE has boiled for years. The day before it escalated and by Monday morning the shooting had begun and ended as a bomb was dropped from a state police helicopter onto the group's row house at 5:27 p.m., igniting a fire that destroyed about 60 neighboring homes

the bureau of prisons was tasked with holding a cooperating move member witness in secure jails and hotels, they moved him around for a year waiting for trial and he ran up a million dollar bill steaks every night, conjugal visits and no white officers were allowed, so when it was finally called to testify he said he had nothing to say. the bureau the placed him in general pop in DC the bros killed him shortly after.

The fire department was positioned with hoses on ladder trucks to extinguish any fire and had already successfully tested their setup. The police commissioner told the fire commissioner to stand down from putting the fire out at the onset of flames. Mayor Goode saw it all live on TV and did nothing. A Wharton MBA disgrace for lack of leadership and backbone. He bears ultimate responsibility for not overriding the police commissioner. As well as the fire commissioner for not doing his duty to prevent the conflagration he knew would result.
The police had a 60 caliber machine gun setup in the commandeered house directly across from the MOVE house (which was fortified by large logs).
So what do you do? They never emerge, trash piles up in the house. They occasionally pop off shots and loudspeakers. Pillbox on the roof. They open up with full auto when cops attempt to serve arrest warrants. When they try something and a fire starts, firemen try to put out fire. They open up on the firemen. Two hour gun battle.
I hear so many people say it could have been done better, cops were wrong, it was just like Waco, etc.
But I never hear alternatives.
Philly PD was very patient with them and this escalated over months and they tried every approach I’ve ever heard of.
Ideas?
Fire ladder trucks were positioned on the street behind the MOVE house. The prepositioned fire hoses were set overlooking the MOVE roof. No firefighters were present on the ladders and were not in any line of gun fire.

I’m not an expert in such techniques. But they exist.
Ok... I’ll wait. Tell me what they are. Tell me how to get them out. They had tried for months of various legal approaches. The neighborhood was demanding action. They are in a rowhouse, armed with rifles. They have a pillbox. They start shooting.
How do you get them out without getting cops and bystanders killed? This group has already shot it out with cops before. Shooting 5 cops, 5 firefighters and 3 bystanders. One cop was killed... he was a USMC WWII and Korea vet.
There is no such thing at a 60 cal machine gun and no, they didn’t have a 50 cal either. And the firemen did put water on it when MOVE started shooting at them again.

As for the police dropping a bomb on them, the police didn't know the perps were storing cans of gasoline on the roof to have them ready for the generator when the power was cut.
I didn’t see walk out on their own in the other reply nor did I see or still see any objection to the bombing.
Hmmm…ok…I did some dogging. Here is what one official said about the siege:
“One of the truths that we will never be able to get to is what was the right thing to do, because we don’t know is whether (they) would have done it two weeks later… without any provocation. And we would have been blamed for not acting.
“All that we can do in law enforcement where we deal with human beings who do different things and march to different drummers is make the best judgment we can based on the information we have available, pursue it, and then do everything we can to get to the truth and to determine what can be done to avoid such tragedies for the future.”
