The End of the Electoral College Is Finally in Sight | Opinion
Newsweak ^ | Apr 19, 2024 | David Faris Associate Professor, Roosevelt University

Earlier this week, Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) decided not to veto an obscure law called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV), which calls for the state's 4 Electoral College votes to be awarded to the presidential candidate who gets the most votes nationally regardless of the outcome in the state. The law doesn't go into effect, however, until states totaling 270 electoral votes join the compact. That's the number of Electoral College votes required to win the presidency. Once dismissed as an unworkable, almost farcical fantasy, the NPV just tallied its 209th electoral vote with Maine, and now has a clear path to victory. And that means that the Electoral College as we know it might not survive past the 2024 election cycle.

This is incredible news. The U.S. Electoral College is, by a quite considerable margin, the most unfathomably stupid democratic institution in the world. It has already malfunctioned twice this century by awarding the presidency to the person who received fewer votes from the American electorate. The 2000 election of George W. Bush, who steered us directly into three distinct catastrophes—the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the Great Recession—sent our new century disastrously off course in ways we are still feeling today. The even-more egregious 2016 elevation of former President Donald Trump, who lost the popular vote more decisively than Bush, resulted in the capture of the Supreme Court by reactionary conservatives for at least a generation.

If this ever came to fruition, and survived all legal battles, then get ready for a completely different election campaign.

Candidates would limit themselves to visiting large cities and completely ignoring rural areas and rural states entirely.

The only hope would be if by the time this came about (if it ever did) that working offsite became such a big and well-ensconced idea, that millions fled large cities to work in safer rural areas... and left their big city ideas behind.

I don’t know who David Faris is, but people like him are truly frightening.

They are fascists/communists who are promoting mob rule and dictatorship

Republican states need to table legislation that the end of the EC means the end of the Union.

most unfathomably stupid

The esteemed professor is obviously not a Math professor.

Why would Maine want to dilute an individual vote by 150,000,000 other nationwide voters?

One vote in a state of only 750,000 votes is 200 times larger

As they bring the country crashing down; well, under Biden, I guess we’re already there.

It Trump, or somebody like him, wins the popular vote, are California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts going to cast their Electoral Votes for Trump, or somebody like him?

No way in Hell.

This ratchet only turns one way.

Alexander Hamilton explained the Electoral College in Federalist #68.

It is all we need to know.

I wish the states would adopt electoral colleges. Then Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area wouldn’t control California, Chicago wouldn’t dominate the rest of Illinois, Portland wouldn’t control Oregon, and Nevadans outside of Clark and Washoe Counties would have a say.

Amend the constitution is the only way....and it will never happen.

Don't bet the house on that.

The purpose of the Electoral College has been well described in this thread, and it makes it a tempting and very attainable target for the Left.

Imagine
- the Exexcutive filled with a perhaps out-of-control anti-MAGA Admin as it is now (they own the military, the borders and the economy),
- along with both branches of the Legislature filled with a majority of dems as it is precariously close to at the moment,
- and a 5/4 liberal USSC.

This is clever from a liberal's point of view: no need to gain a constitutional super-majority to wreck the constitution - do a work-around with a simple majority scheme.

One-man; one-vote; one-time.

Exactly.

Now I don’t have to care about fraudulent votes in California or Chicago. Those areas are already lost.

But if my vote elsewhere can be cancelled by rampant ballot-stuffing in Chicago or LA, I will have to care!
