Electric vehicles release more toxic particles into the atmosphere and are worse for the environment than their gas-powered counterparts, according to a resurfaced study.
The study, published by emissions data firm Emission Analytics, was released in 2022 but has attracted a wave of attention this week after being cited in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Sunday.
It found that brakes and tires on EVs release 1,850 times more particle pollution compared to modern tailpipes, which have “efficient” exhaust filters, bringing gas-powered vehicles’ emissions to new lows.
Today, most vehicle-related pollution comes from tire wear.
As heavy cars drive on light-duty tires — most often made with synthetic rubber made from crude oil and other fillers and additives — they deteriorate and release harmful chemicals into the air, according to Emission Analytics.
Because EVs are on average 30% heavier, brakes and tires on the battery-powered cars wear out faster than on standard cars.
Emission Analytics found that tire wear emissions on half a metric tonne of battery weight in an EV are more than 400 times as great as direct exhaust particulate emissions.
For reference, half a metric tonne is equivalent to roughly 1,100 pounds.
The most popular EV in the US, Tesla’s Model Y, boasts a lithium-ion battery that weighs in at a hefty 1,836 pounds.
Another sought-after electric model, Ford’s F-150 Lightning pickup truck, also has an approximately 1,800-pound battery.
The study throws doubt on the practicality of the Biden administration’s EV mandates, which tout electric cars as “zero-emissions vehicles” in a quest to force two-thirds of new cars in America to be all-electric by the year 2032.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that annual electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) losses averaged about 5% of the electricity transmitted and distributed in the United States in 2018 through 2022.
Electric vehicles were never about the environment. It’s about damaging businesses. It’s about control. It’s about POWER. And, it’s about having something to scold people about. The first electric car drivers were smug. They were saving the planet and the rest of us were horrible a$$holes just polluting THEIR world.
Now when I see an electric car I look to see if it’s smoking.
OH NOOOOOEz !!!
....Electric vehicles release more toxic particles into the atmosphere and are worse for the environment than their gas-powered counterparts...
Who knew?
Surprise, surprise!
electric vehicles will help us end the influence of OPEC
on the world
Cars do NOT have "exhaust filters." Diesel vehicles DO have "diesel particulate filter (DPF)." Does the author think a catalytic converter is a particular filters?
Since gasoline engine particulate emissions are close to zero, the main comparison should be tires and brakes EV vs gasoline ICE. But the convoluted page does not get there.
Science and logic don’t apply in the Biden Regime. Mandates that fatten his bank accounts and appease the Loony Left are all that matter.
Temper tantrums and ad hominems to follow more public circulation of this study. In the mean time, it’ll be ignored.
If you buy one you’re stuck with it no one wants it not the dealer , the dealer is happy to get rid of it in the first place
Buncha sheep bought into the latest fad. Just like the Covid crowd. Gotta have the mask while driving a Tesla. Dorks.
The DNC only cares about destroying the Auto industry, facts don’t matter.
Twenty years ago this would have been bold and useful information. Not it looks like it’s somebody joining the “piling on” of the battery-only EV’s demise.
All this same data (or essentially similar) was available 20 years ago. And none of the relevant science has changed in that time either, so what took them so long? Did they just not have the stones to speak ill of Saint Elon while he had up a full head of steam?
Fire not the only danger with lithium-ion batteries
When one of them starts acting up, get as far away from it as you can, as fast as you can, unless you enjoy breathing hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide.
Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. That model has a bad rep for not performing as a truck should. And I keep getting emails from my Ford dealer to buy the EV.
Bkmk
Ban them-—now.
Anyone who cares about the planet and climate change has to act to ban the EVs. I already heard the old dead batteries are leaking and the mining to produce new ones causes damage and pollution. /S
But heavy freight trucks do more damage to road infrastructure, and their tires and brakes pollute far more than passenger vehicles. Ban all freight trucks, and go back to using rail trains to move freight. The argument about tires on EV’s is ridiculous, especially since they’re a small percentage of vehicles on the road. Might as well ban car racing events, where drivers can use up tires in a single race.
