...
A largely unexplained decision by a Maryland town to suspend its entire police force has left residents shocked, skeptical and on edge.
The small town of Ridgely, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, announced it was suspending officers of the Ridgely Police Department, leaving other public safety agencies to fill the void. But the town’s residents remain entirely in the dark about why it was being shut down.
"What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way," said Laura Cline, a longtime Ridgely resident. "Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth."
Holly Justice, an esthetician who owns a spa in Ridgely, added: "We were blindsided. It makes you question the integrity of people who are supposed to protect and serve."
Last week, officials said on the Ridgely’s website that the town’s three-member commission had "suspended with pay the entirety of the Ridgely Police Department," and that the Office of State Prosecutor is investigating potential wrongdoing.
"It doesn’t add up," said Gennie Woo, a business owner in downtown Ridgely since 1983. "Everybody is skeptical about what happened. We just want to know how and why."

Not to worry.
They are being replaced with illegal immigrant gestapo.
I’d still be looking for work elsewhere. The moment an employers mentions any intention of replacing you, that is the time to leave. You will always have a target on your back the moment it gets mentioned and it is only a matter of time.
So, if you catch a thief, set ‘em on fire and call the fire department?
You peasants just need to shut up and obey your betters! Got it!?
1600 people of which 16% are black per wikipedia. Taking chances?
Going national with the idea?
THREE city councilors made this decision for the entire town, without asking for input? Ten to one the councilors are “woke” and the officers refused to go along with it. Our former police chief was politically moderate, and the city counciul replaced him with a woke DEI hire.
Proof-of-concept, no doubt.
We see this garbage too often on the local, state, and national levels. Officials take an action (and maybe with good reason).
But then they arrogantly refuse to offer even a bare-bones explanation to their citizens. Just shut up and get your tax payments in on time, peasants.
“You peasants just need to shut up and obey your betters! Got it”!?
....and turn in your guns immediately.
Six police officers in a town of 1600?
If they are full time that is a pretty high number. 2.4 to 1000 is average. That would be 3.7 to 1000.
And police officers are expensive.
Could be any number of reasons but it is odd.
annnnnd criminals and illegals are celebrating!
Yes, for this quiet community, sounds excessive.
Well, that’s two officers per 8 hour shift 24 hours a day. Not out of line, I don’t think.
That they suspended them with pay says there is some degree of uncertainty as to what is going on.
It might be that one officer was doing something wrong. Or it may be that the entire department was either up to shenanigans or turning a blind eye.
Or perhaps the council is up to shenanigans.
Either way there is not enough information in the article to make any sort of judgment.
Lots of places of that size have a dispatcher who is on call 24/7 and will rouse the troops if needed but for the most part they are not.
Regular stuff is handled during normal business hours.
Now all the folks in town can go riot and burn down Main Street. Let the mayor stop the riots. Just claim you are BLM.
Six officers is barely full-time coverage when you factor in training days, vacations, and court appearances.
Usual formula is a minimum of eight for full time...and that assumes a “working Chief” and “working detective” both of whom answer 911 calls.
That is only 2 per shift.
