Chuck Mawhinney, a Marine Corps veteran who became the deadliest sniper in that branch’s history during the Vietnam War with 103 confirmed and 216 probable kills, has died at age 75.

Mawhinney attended sniper scout school and was deployed to Vietnam in 1968, where he primarily used a Remington M40 rifle from 300-1,000 yards away.

One legendary engagement saw Mawhinney kill 16 enemy soldiers crossing a river in a single volley of headshots on Valentine’s Day 1969, intimidating the rest to withdraw.

Surprised I didn't know about him, when I saw the title I immediately thought of Carlos Hathcock.

Showed what one motivated Marine and his rifle can do.

RIP.

That was my first thought as well.

Jessie Kelly (USMC veteran) duly honored Mawhinney on his evening radio program this week.

If I recall correctly, his 16 kills at the river crossing was with a M14 mounted with a starlight scope.

I did a search on the title and nothing came up. I’m surprised I missed previous FR posting as I’d be interested, except that I was traveling and was very busy that specific day. Looks like others didn’t see the previous post either, so it was news to them.

Anyway, I’m not sorry for reposting to honor a true warrior. He was more man than me. RIP

. He knew he would need to put down a lot in a hurry. He left his sniper rifle back at camp.

So did I, but I had also heard of him.

I can’t remember the name of the movie, but I remember the instructor saying, the most dangerous weapon in the world, is a Marine and his rifle.

Anytime a Marine legend dies it’s always news even if it’s a year old!

Depends which side you are on. Back on the Enterprise we said the most dangerous marine was the one trying to land on the carrier.

Thomas Fowler, 63 known kills outside the wire, mainly hill 880/881 Khe Sahn. 1/3rd marine recon. He had 98 total but many unconfirmed as no one could get confirmation where he hunted.
If anything, his numbers were low

Not well known, Took a third in a contest( Hathcock took 1st).
Fowler earned the Navy Cross, silver star, bronze...he might still be alive.

Used to fish and hunt with him. Mostly fish as he burned out on the hunting.
