Many Vietnam vets came home, their children and grandchildren exist because Mawhinney killed their armed enemies before they were able to do any more harm. That is a great legacy for any man.

Showed what one motivated Marine and his rifle can do.

From what I gather, he and Carlos Hathcock actively stalked and hunted their targets, as opposed to more recent sniper records where shots are taken from a fixed hide.

That photo is sourced from:

What I hear from Winona, is that Somali’s are installed from Rochester all the way up to the south side of Minneapolis, and then into the city of Minneapolis at the near south and southwest sides of the downtown.

I recall scanning with a AN/PVS-2 Starlight Scope in Vietnam, and I didn’t think clarity was that good. Mawhinney must have been some shot.

Mawhinney attended sniper scout school and was deployed to Vietnam in 1968

...at age 19. God bless his soul, in Jesus' name.

Me, too. Having read the paperbook account of his exploits, it seems likely that suffering the rigors of his deployments probably led to his early death at 56.

For both of them, RIP.

The Marine Corps saw its last class graduate from the Scout Sniper Course in December. Sad day.

I'd say it was the burns that contributed to his early death: On September 16, 1969, Hathcock's career as a sniper came to a sudden end along Highway 1, north of Landing Zone Baldy, when the LVTP-5 he was riding on struck an anti-tank mine. Hathcock pulled seven Marines from the flame-engulfed vehicle, suffering severe burns (some third-degree) to his face, arms, and legs, before someone pulled him away and placed him in water because he was unaware of how badly he had been burnt.

I remember a story about Carlos in a shooting competition after his service and passed out from the heat because he could no sweat.

Yeah, I read all this man years ago, and also the other day. What the bio said was that his death was from the complications of multiple sclerosis.

I have known a few people that were pretty badly burned, but lived a long life. And I gave also known some people, men and women, who died early from MS (causes unknown)(including a cousin)(painful). So one doesn't know what the explanation is.

But thanks for your reply.
