Surprised I didn't know about him, when I saw the title I immediately thought of Carlos Hathcock.

Chuck Mawhinney, a Marine Corps veteran who became the deadliest sniper in that branch’s history during the Vietnam War with 103 confirmed and 216 probable kills, has died at age 75.

Showed what one motivated Marine and his rifle can do.

RIP.

That was my first thought as well.

If it's six days old, is it still "news"?

If I recall correctly, his 16 kills at the river crossing was with a M14 mounted with a starlight scope.

So did I, but I had also heard of him.

Thomas Fowler, 63 known kills outside the wire, mainly hill 880/881 Khe Sahn. 1/3rd marine recon. He had 98 total but many unconfirmed as no one could get confirmation where he hunted.
If anything, his numbers were low

Not well known, Took a third in a contest( Hathcock took 1st).
Fowler earned the Navy Cross, silver star, bronze...he might still be alive.

Used to fish and hunt with him. Mostly fish as he burned out on the hunting.

Many Vietnam vets came home, their children and grandchildren exist because Mawhinney killed their armed enemies before they were able to do any more harm. That is a great legacy for any man.

From what I gather, he and Carlos Hathcock actively stalked and hunted their targets, as opposed to more recent sniper records where shots are taken from a fixed hide.

Mawhinney attended sniper scout school and was deployed to Vietnam in 1968

...at age 19. God bless his soul, in Jesus' name.

The Marine Corps saw its last class graduate from the Scout Sniper Course in December. Sad day.
