France’s President Macron had a plan to make millions of electric vehicles a year. Chancellor Scholz planned to put 15 million on Germany’s roads by 2030. President Biden trumped the lot with a $174bn (£138bn) plan to make the US the world leader. Even Boris Johnson Get info without leaving the page.
– remember him – had a £1bn plan to beef up our charging network.
Rewind only a couple of years, and almost every president or prime minister was making electric vehicles the cornerstone of an industrial strategy. And yet, this week we have learned that Renault is abandoning plans to separately list its electric vehicle (EV) and software business, while Volvo is winding down its Polestar electric sports car subsidiary.
In reality, amid an onslaught of Chinese competition, and falling sales, the West’s electric vehicle dream is quickly unravelling – and we need to relearn all the lessons in why grand, state-led industrial strategies never work.

There is nothing wrong with EVs themselves. They are often great as run-arounds for dense urban environments, and as long as the raw materials are sourced correctly, and the chargers are not powered by coal-burning generators, they are probably a little better for the environment than the petrol version.
If people want them, then that’s great. The trouble with the industry right now is that demand is falling because the vehicles cost far more than anyone expected, and what market there is will be captured by Chinese manufacturers such as BYD that can make vehicles far more cheaply than anyone in the West can. The result? A lot of government money will be wasted.

the purpose of the battery car push is to destroy private transportation
now everyone on the bus!
Thanks. I like that one, too.
Glad to help.
Ethiopia may as well have banned inter-planetary space travel for its citizens.
No. 2 is a bit of a double-dip because you did say they have 30% less range in cold weather. However, the point is, if you are trying to make it to a certain location, you might have to sacrifice heating the inside of the car to get there ... something no ICE driver has to worry about.
Consider the source of the story... YAHOO "NEWS?".. need I say more?
“the purpose of the battery car push is to destroy private transportation
now everyone on the bus!”
Yep. Too many people still think it is due to incompetence and a lack of awareness as to the limits of EV transportation. The fact is that they do not plan on the plebs traveling much at all. We will live in our 15 minute cities and bike, walk, or take the EV bus to pre-determined locations. THEY will be the only ones with private transportation and access to the lands outside the 15 minute cities. Or at least, that is their plan. It’s a bold one.
Let’s see how it works out for them.
* Expect a huge increase in lung cancer cases and other lung diseases worldwide due to an increase of tire dust in the air. The tire dust will start another climate change scenario.
“…and as long as the raw materials are sourced correctly, and the chargers are not powered by coal-burning generators,…”
Yeah. Good luck with that.
EVs are upsized golf carts that give a usable imitation of a real car, over short distances, and in warmer climates.
Nothing wrong with having one.
If I lived in Florida and only needed to go to Publix or to pick up my hot date at the Villages, I might consider it.
But I live in New Hampshire.
“...grand, state-led industrial strategies never work...”
Hey, it’s a Great Leap Forward [in EVs].
What could go wrong?
It can work. If we invest a few trillion we can move LA closer to NY, requiring fewer charges.
"Government motto: "Subsidize failure with tax-payer dollars!""
Facilitated by the long arm of the ill-conceived 16th Amendment (16A; direct taxes), junk science remedies for government / industrial-manufactured crises are basically nothing more than politically correct excuses to funnel unconstitutional tax dollars to desperate Democrats and RINOs to help keep them in power imo.
"16th Amendment : The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
“ If the tax be not proposed for the common defence, or general welfare, but for other objects, wholly extraneous, (as for instance, for propagating Mahometanism among the Turks, or giving aids and subsidies to a foreign nation, to build palaces for its kings, or erect monuments to its heroes,) it would be wholly indefensible upon constitutional principles [emphases added].” — Justice Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution 2 (1833).
From the congressional record:
”Simply this, that the care of the property, the liberty, and the life of the citizen, under the solemn sanction of an oath imposed by your Constitution, is in the States and not in the federal government [emphases added]. I have sought to effect no change in that respect in the Constitution of the country.” —John Bingham, Congressional. Globe. 1866, page 1292 (see top half of third column)
“Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. If once they become inattetive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, judges and governors, shall all become wolves [emphasis added]. It seems to be the law of our general nature.” - Thomas Jefferson (Letter to Edward Carrington January 16, 1787)
Pelosi: "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." (non-FR; 6 sec.)
Democrats [and RINOs] Are Terrified Of An Educated And Informed Public (3.12.23)
Repealing 16A, the 17th Amendment (17A) too (popular voting for federal senators), would not only put a stop to unconstitutional federal taxes, but would also effectively “secede” ALL the states from unconstitutionally big federal government imo.
Consider that repealing 16A alone would probably cause crook politicians who have been following the tsunami of unconstitutional tax dollars to DC to lose interest in staying in DC regardless of 17A.
Yeah, with so many problems, it’s tough to avoid all double-counting. Maybe I’ll move the heater problem to the 30% less range problem.
“The tire dust will start another climate change scenario.”
LOL...file under “Damned if you do...”
LOL! The idiot stood right there while all that toxic white smoke billowed all around him. I wonder how much of that stuff he breathed in?

For some reason, when I read your post I had a vision of the photo where Al Gore is bending over sticking his face into the barrel of his M-16. Some things never change.
That e-bike video is all kinds of entertaining. Unfortunately, a number of apartment fires have been caused by similar bikes - the owners store and charge them inside and - whoosh.
