General Motors will lay off about 1,300 workers from two of its Michigan plants, according to WARN notices the company has filed with state regulators.
The job cuts at GM’s Orion Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly, which will take place in the new year, come after the automaker said in October that it would be delaying electric pickup truck production into 2025.
The layoffs at GM’s Orion plant will affect 945 employees, while 369 employees will be cut from the Lansing assembly plant.
The Orion plant produced the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV crossover, and GM is planning to produce additional electric vehicles, namely the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV at the plant. But the company announced in October that it would be delaying the start of production, sealing the fate of workers while the plant remains idled.
GM said in October that the delay was not the result of the recent United Auto Workers’ strike, which was the longest US auto strike in 25 years.
CNN has reached out to the United Auto Workers union, which represents workers at the two plants, for comment.
“GM anticipates having job opportunities for all impacted team members per the provisions of the UAW-GM National Agreement. Lansing Grand River Assembly will continue producing the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5,” the company said in an emailed statement to CNN about the Lansing layoffs.
UAW members who were laid off at the Orion plant will “be offered other opportunities in Michigan, including positions at Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck. Orion Assembly salaried employees will also be placed in other internal opportunities in accordance with GM policy,” GM said.
The layoffs at GM reflect the growing uncertainty facing the electric vehicle market.

Best. Economy. Ever. EVER! Right, Brandon? *SPIT*
The Orion plant produced the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV crossover................
I think I see the problem..................
Not cutting any jobs in their Mexico operations?
At one point last summer, GM decided to discontinue the Bolt at the end of the year. They later changed their mind, but are changing the battery pack technology so it will take some time to retool the plant. Who is going to buy an EV truck that has lousy towing capabilities? Even if one doesn’t tow anything the resale value is likely to be low..
Reads like nobody will actually be out of work. Per union rules, they’ll create positions to keep them on the payroll somewhere else in GM.
Biden walked the picket line with UAW. How’s that workin’ out for ya Joe? How about youse guys in the UAW Union?
A Federal Mandate that ALL Public Employee’s NATIONWIDE exclusively use non carbon emitting modes of Transportation for ALL Travel to and from their respective workplace and ALL Work related Travel would fix the problem.
Nobody wants to buy a Chevrolet Dolt.
Are they cutting 1300 workers or 1300 jobs?
If it is the former, I hope they got lots of bandaids.
WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A DEEP HOLE, STOP DIGGING....................
GM ceased production of the Camero
That’s the odd part. To my understanding Bolt’s were selling well but GM leadership want to discontinue them to free up capacity for other EV models.
It’s very strange, especially with the other EV news of pulling back production in general.
That said - I know one of the Orion plant maintenance foremen. He is exceptional - was promised he had a ‘job for life’ (sigh). If anyone knows of an opening please let me know.
Ending production of one of the only vehicles that people actually want to buy makes great business sense.
Right after the UAW gets a wonderful new contract.
It’s ‘bait & switch’ for the stock holders.
To try and prevent the stock from crashing.
Say it’s for one thing when actually it’s for another.
Hoping that in the meantime the situation blows over............
Less lithium mining. Saves the planet.
Did you mean Camaro?
Nobody wants to buy a Chevrolet Dolt.

Are they having “buy one get one free” sales yet?
That was a sales promotion for the Yugo back in the day.
I’m surprised they slipped that line into the article.
