Despite overwhelming military superiority, Israel is struggling to develop an effective strategy to tackle the tunnel network under Gaza.
This "underworld" has provided Hamas with a degree of sanctuary beyond the gaze of satellites, drones and military forces.
How will Israel defeat Hamas without destroying the tunnel network?
The "Gaza metro" is bigger in scale than the London Underground network. Many of the tunnels were originally dug in the early 1980s to bypass the border between Egypt and Rafah, enabling the illegal smuggling of trade and weapons.
However, they have since been expanded into two further categories: defensive and offensive.
The former is primarily focused on the storage of weapons, logistic supplies (fuel, water and food) and command and control HQs, whereas the latter is an elaborate network of tunnels across the border into Israel to enable Hamas to take small-scale offensive action, and crucially to seize hostages.
Since assuming control of Gaza in 2006, Hamas has taken the development of the tunnel network to a new level.
The soft sandstone under Gaza is conducive to tunnelling, but Hamas has also adapted the network in response to Israel's various attempts to destroy it.
Bunker buster bombs could penetrate deep underground - and if they did not destroy a tunnel directly, the shifting sands would cause nearby tunnels to implode.
By digging the tunnels deeper - the main network is now over 20m (65ft) down rather than around 10m (32ft) for the original tunnels - Hamas made them far more difficult to target and destroy.

Israel is pumping millions of gallons of seawater into the tunnels daily. I wonder how long ham-ass can hold their breath?

They have already set up pumps to flush out the tunnels with seawater. I wonder if they heard about this idea on Free Republic?
Flood the with seawater and turn them into sewers.
There is no way something that big was built without Israel knowing.
Yeah of course the world sends aid to the poor Palestinians which is taken by Hamas to build tunnels.
Just think if those people were dedicated to building a free and prosperous society like Israel has done. The money wasted on those tunnel networks is astounding. Gaza has no economy and produces NOTHING. All the money for these tunnels came from foreign aid that was meant for humanitarian purposes.
Cut off all aid and they would get serious about building a thriving, self-sustaining society
No, Israel is having no such strategic problems. Israel is systematically destroying the tunnels starting with the access shafts.
I can’t cite the numbers with precision but recall that so far on the order of 500 of 800 known access shafts have been closed/destroyed.
The access shafts are located within the lower story of existing buildings. ( including the homes of Hamas leadership) The building is declared Hamas and then bombed. A bull dozer then clears the dust and chunks and rebar tangle to expose the shaft. A decision is made to leave, plug with a “sponge bomb” or destroy.
There is video of “micro kamakazi drones” that make their way through the tunnel until a spot for destruction is reached. The drone then explodes the charge it is carrying and destroys the precise tunnel location selected.
Since The IDF is going to occupy Gaza for the foreseeable future, it is not necessary to spend time and resources to destroy al tunnels at present. The destruction can be undertaken in a controlled manner for years to come.

Why bother trying to defend not destroying the tunnels? Our (and their) media already has ledes prepared telling us that today, Israel destroyed (pick a random number greater than 1,000) innocent Palestinians. So, no what actually has occurred, the lies will be the same. You know, a Palestinian can lie without their lips even moving. It’s a Muslim thing.
I suggest stuffing them full of dead pigs and Hamas members and then sealing them in concrete.
Just set up the pumps. Who cares if the groundwater is polluted. Desalinization plants solves the issue.
Just having the pumps there, ready to go will be enough to spook the sand nazi’s out.
President Trump called together the Arab nations who have in effect thrown money into Palestine to sooth religious requirements for brother hood to those less fortunate. They all knew that the money was being misused and wasted. However, there was no remedy at hand
They agreed and came together with the Abraham Accords.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirate4s and Qatar all bought off the PA and Hamas to prevent the hordes of Palestinians from escaping
They will now have a major say in combination with Israel and the USA as to what will happen in the old Palestinian territory.
1) find access shaft.
2) fill tunnel with water
3) send in submersible drone to go down tunnel as far as it goes, and place explosives there.
4) detonate explosives. The incompressibility of water will channel the force of the explosion to blow any airlocks that have kept water from going further in.
5) if water level drops, repeat from 2.
6) if blast uncovers other access shafts, repeat from 1
Anyway, one would wager that at least 90% of the tunnels are below sea level, and... hey! look at that! There's the Mediterranean Sea right there! Bring me that really big pump and hold my beer!
I don't see a problem. I've heard the Mediterranean Sea has quite a bit of water.
open a couple tanks of acetylene in the bottom of the entrances, and run like hell. its like killing moles.
Gas them and flood them.
