HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A large U.S. Navy aircraft ended up in shallow waters of Kaneohe Bay on Monday afternoon after overshooting the runway at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. and the large plane could be partially submerged in shallow waters. Sources said the aircraft had nine people on board and all of them made it to shore.

Injuries were reported to be minor, but that could not be independently confirmed.

Looks like the nose radar housing came off.

Yeah, nosing into the drink would pop it off easily. The nose cones are made of spun filament to avoid metal interfering with the radar. They're only attached along the outer ring and have no internal bracing.

I doubt there was any fuel leak at all.

There's always a fuel leak. If you walk up close to any aircraft, especially military ones, except maybe the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels due to their fanatic cleaning, you see streaks from different parts of the aircraft, not just the engines. Add in a slam into the water and things crack.

Would have been early-eighties, and at the airport on Maui near some exotic flower vendor.

Checking skyvector.com I see Kahului is a controlled field activated 1971, so that wouldn't have been it - part of the problem was it was an uncontrolled field where we would fly for bounce pattern work, to unload the Barber's Point controllers - get out of their hair - and the flight crew's rhythm was interrupted by traffic necessitating a go-around, ergo bringing the gear up where they had not been doing so in the pattern.

Could have been Waimea-Kohala. That's 5,200 feet which would have suited a P-3B.

I think it was VP-22, but that's been many, many moons...

Saw this tweet....the Navy brags about their diverse crews, but, you're not allowed to say it 🙄 ....

DIVERSITY: Shortly after a Navy P-8A overshot the runway and landed in Kaneohe Bay (everyone survived) I pointed out that the crew was diverse. For that I got a scathing community note saying it wasn’t true. The Navy is very proud of the fact that it’s P-8 fleet features the most diverse crews in military aviation. 1st Lt. Hailey Harms, a Marine spokesperson confirmed the crew was both diverse and alive. Because the MSM isn’t reporting the identity of the crew the community notes community decided my comment was wrong. Annoying and false. Before you apply a community note make sure you know what you’re talking about - your inability to confirm a statement isn’t proof it isn’t accurate. Note: This crew photo is just the one the Navy distributed to show how diverse its P-8 crews are. They did not share one of the P-8 crew that went for a swim.pic.twitter.com/53IVyNZAiE— @amuse (@amuse) November 21, 2023

I got sick on my pre-solo flight (a big problem I was told)

My son got sick on his dollar ride, in initial flight training at Pueblo. I don’t know for sure, how much time they intended to give him, but he spent a certain amount of time in the Barany chair. Eventually, he got over the air sickness, and never had any more problems with it.

I used to live in Kaneohe and could look out from our deck at the Bay and the Marine Base with the planes coming and going all the time. Lived on Iki Iki St. on the Bayside 1974.

The plane identified as a boat. That didn’t turn out well.

A.) There are plenty of totally competent female pilots in the Navy.

B.) I've flown cross-country in P8s numerous times. These planes practically fly themselves. I've seen pilots, male and female, sleeping in the cockpit (and in a P8, it's called a "flight station") while the plane is on auto-pilot.

C.) It's highly unlikely the Navy will release the name of the pilots involved so all this speculation is moot.

D.) I've seen female MH-60R pilots land helicopters on the pitching and rolling deck of Navy destroyers at sea. I've seen female helo pilots take off from MH-60S on aircraft carriers in the dead of night. I've been privileged to serve with many outstanding female Navy pilots and some of the best Navy Chiefs I've ever worked beside were females.

Similar experience in 1990 at Hondo and Vance.

Lots of extra chances for women, minorities, and the politically connected.

Not diversity...”All Female Crew”...

Ah, but ‘diverse’ really means no white males, so the crew is extremely ‘diverse’.
