There was a story a few years back that salsa had become America's favorite condiment. I don't know what happened to that. More recent stories have ketchup and mayo battling it out.

The chicken tikka masala story, obviously false in the case of the US, may have come from Britain -- so much stuff on the internet does and people don't bother to check. Even in the case of Britain, fish and chips is probably still more popular.
