The staying power of the Bud Light boycott
Axios ^ | July 9, 2023 | Eleanor Hawkins

The boycott in response to Bud Light's outreach to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney has had notable staying power.

Why it matters: The ferocity of this particular boycott — which has entered its third month of headlines — is due in large part to the brand's misalignment with key consumers, easily accessible competitors and the poor corporate response.

Yep, the old customers were “fratty” and “out of touch”, so they needed to update their image by being “bright” and “inclusive”.

Unfortunately, I can never get the image of a man pretending to be a girl, wearing a lavender bra in a bubble bath, fake dancing to elevator music while on pretend hold, and sipping once from a can of Bud Light. Never can I get that image out of my head. Blowing bubbles, rolling his eyes, and acting so overly dramatic. It absolutely disgusted me to my core.

This was one of the new “inclusive” arrangements that BL decided to make.

A mistake of epic proportions. Complete error in judgment.

Not only is BL dead to me, but all of AB-InBev is dead to me.

Switch to Guinness. God gave him the recipe in response to his anguished prayers about all the alcoholics and how to deal with it. Seriously, even the name- Bud Lite (in the loafers.)

Perhaps you are right. However I wouldn’t know a good beer from a bad beer. Every beer I’ve ever tried has tasted awful to me.

“It is going to skyrocket back up after the 2024 election.”

So after Trump is elected we’re all going to identify to and support perversion, mental illness and crap beer?

YeahOkay....

Look, if it's the NFL, your alternatives are limited. Sure there are alternatives, but the NFL brand is unique.

Beer, on the the other hand... I mean there are 700 brands of beer, and 695 of them are superior to Bud Light. That the CEO of the company did not grasp this basic fact certainly puts him out of the running for 'businessman of the year'.

It’s going to really infuriate them if a movie like Sound of Freedom comes out that’s traditionally moralistic and people go and see it at higher and higher amounts.

Secularistic crap moralism appeals to one type of people, and they’re not in the majority.

It’s not a boycott - it’s an “I ain’t gonna buy that sh** any more”.

No conscious decision needed. I walk right past the Bud light in the grocery store.

That is bc it is not a boycott.

It is abandonment.

Light beer is basically a commodity. The permiums taste the same. By now people who bought bud light have found their preferred substitute and that decision is permanent.

And the bud brand is permanently damaged. No real guy will be seen dead with it.

It’s been banished. Not boycotted.” A brief glance at the smiling Dylan Mulvaney holding a Bud Light is enough to reject Bud Light forever. Proof: Today Subaru is still trying to wash away the stain from their 1996 ads in gay publications.

I’ve seen a couple of guys drinking Bud Light in TX this weekend. But they weren’t good old boys.

“Or was it the sargento cheese guys...”

Did I miss a boycott? I love a good boycott, but I can’t monitor everything. Please let me know why I should abandon Sargento.

I saw a guy pick up a case of Bud Light the other day. I just smirked and he scurried away with it. He knew exactly why I smirked.

Customers have moved to other brands. Bud Light is not essential or unique.

Cause it’s easy to keep boycotting something that sucks. Once a boycotter got away from bud light they got to drink better beer (probably, I mean if one looks hard enough one could find worse beer). Even if bud completely rights their image, why go back to crap. Really it’s the reason they’ve been losing market for years anyway. This just accelerated it. 5 years of market rot in 3 months. There’s a reason Modelo was poised to take over the #1 spot. Better beer that had been gaining share for a long time.

They underestimated the power of male ridicule. What man can even touch a Bud Light any more without having aspersions cast upon his sexuality by his friends? :)
