All new vehicles become used cars and trucks once they're sold.
It's an obvious statement, but one that needs to be laid out to explain the root cause for ongoing inventory and pricing issues in the U.S. used vehicle market, which has been a barometer for the country's inflation levels.

It was an unprecedented action that eventually led to additional supply chain problems, such as an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, causing factories to cease production again for weeks, if not months, at a time in recent years.

I worked in a fast food joint that changed it friar once a week and maybe got two buckets of used griese out of it.
The used car market will be boosted by repossessed vehicles. The economic downturn has increased repos as out of work people can no longer afford their car notes.

Parts for my 25 to 35 year old Japanese vehicles are getting easier to find, if anything. Not from dealers or official channels, but from the huge SE Asian market where variations of the vehicles are still made and parts are still made (mostly in Thailand, I think, but not exclusively. These are NOT Chinese parts, except for some from Taiwan). I have not had any problems with the quality of the parts. The customers over there want them to work and they usually do.
I don’t thing this has anything to do with EVs, which are flailing.
Report the other day how they’re being totaled for minor damage because of the batteries and cost to repair. Pretty soon they won’t be insured.
Anyway, the lady who runs GM said that they’ll never mass produce cars, again, like they have in the past. Too much money being made keeping inventory low.
I guess she’s following orders from her Chinese masters.

At that dollar figure you’re talking about doing every last bit of the work yourself right down to the sand prep and paint. If you got the skills, more power to you. My 63 Impala pretty much needs a frame off restoration; a rotisserie job. It rolls, and it runs, but it really needs to be gone all the way through end to end, and $12,000 won’t touch that.

I know, I’m not comparing your cars to Cuban ones. that’s the difference between classic cars in cubs and the USA. Here they are beloved and cared for by people who love them for the history, the nostalgia, the purs mojo of them and are willing and able to get the best for them. There they are all you can get so you do your best to keep them moving.

I’ve already done most of the work. Just doing upgrades like disc brakes, a posi for the Camaro. I’ve been planning this a long time. Now I get the benefits.

Wow. Luckily I am in the high desert and we don’t have rust issues. Geesh. The used cars 10 years old are more than I paid for my first couple houses.

Why wouldn’t this concept work for all other consumer goods? Cut back on the production of houses / computers / TVs / Soft Drinks / telephones / exercise equipment / baseball bats. Drive the price WAY UP and get rich.
Because someone else will crank up production and grab a larger market share.
My vehicle is a 1994 Toyota 4Runner that I bought used in 2010 for around $2300-and it even has a sunroof. I drive a 4x4-can be either a pickup or an SUV-because of the unpaved steep roads out here where I live and work-I also sometimes tow a tiny utility trailer loaded with tools and materials. My vehicle before this one was a 1983 4x4 Chevy Blazer which I sold to a relative who needed that big V8 to tow his new work trailer-The gas bill for it was hitting me hard anyway...
About a year ago, I had the timing belt on the 4Runner, all hoses, thermostat, rear seal and a few small things replaced-a neighbor 2 miles up the road owns a mechanic shop-it is right beside his barn-I paid a bit over $800.00, and it runs great now.
Two months ago, I had to buy new tires-4 Kumo 31 X 1050 X 15 all terrains cost me nearly $800.00-that mechanic got them, put them on, etc-that was the best price either of us could find-makes no sense, when a major engine repair is the same price-I now need a replacement motor for one of the power windows, but that is at least $125.00, so it will have to wait...
There is no way I would have an EV even if I had the money for it-the distances out here between places you need to go would have me stranded in no time without a charge-unless the battery malfunctioned and started a forest fire first-I don’t even want a newer model vehicle-GPS, etc adds to the price and creeps me out anyway...

It’s got a 350 crate motor with a mystery cam in it running Vortec heads underneath a 750cfm Holley 4160 that I’ve named to dial in pretty close.
Needs new rubber just about everywhere throughout the body and suspension.
Needs paint.
Basically, I need to take it all apart.
Strip and powder coat the frame.
Strip, repair and refinish the body.

They took the ‘broken window’ theory of economics as a tutorial instead of the dire warning that it is.
I do know the drill. I’m in Vegas, so I’ve not suffered degradation lately. But I had to patch the quarter panels and I just up and replaced all the front end sheet metal.
I’m too old to do rotisserie, that’s for the next owner.
327, aluminum heads, Howards roller cam, truram stainless exhaust manifolds, 700r4 tranny. Just need tires and I can daily drive. Should be about 390 horsies.
Apparently I missed all those great selling points! I could not get my mind off the very high price for new EVs (even w/ givernment subsidies) that had limited driving range, and eventually could cost a fortune when the batteries ultimately die.

I know a guy that does frame off restorations ... a rotisserie job it is ... it will cost about 100k but will be ready for Barrett Jackson when he’s done.
