What President Ronald Reagan and House Speaker Tip O’Neill (D-Mass.) “deplored more than each other’s political philosophy was stalemate, and a country that was so polarized by ideology and party politics that it could not move forward. There were tough words and important disagreements. . . yet a stronger commitment to getting things done.”
That observation came from O’Neill’s oldest son, Thomas P. O’Neill, in a 2012 New York Times column entitled, “Frenemies: A Love Story” regarding his Democratic father’s relationship with the Republican president.
O’Neill and Reagan were both of Irish descent. And when disagreements got heated between the two parties, the two men would often meet in a sign of respect with an eye toward (relative) civility.
“I’m going to cook you some Boston corned beef and I’m going to have an Irish storyteller there,” the Speaker told the president in 1983 during a joint celebration after the House passed a bipartisan Social Security package.
”I’ll have to polish up some new Irish jokes,” Reagan mused in return.
Despite Democrats controlling the House and Senate at the time, some important things got done through this foreign concept called compromise, which most Americans embrace.

I bet you thought Jimmy Carter was underrated, Bush 41 was a great president, Clinton never killed anyone, Bush 43 was another great president, Obama was born in Hawaii to Americans, Trump was overrated and Biden is doing a wonderful job...
Wrong on pretty much everything.
Oh and he got snickered on the amnesty he loved so much too. It was easy to fool him.
Oh captain,
You are going to piss off the amnesty lovers now.
Totally absurd...
Reagan brought down the Soviet Union without a shot being
fired, but was a RINO?????
Good grief.
Ronald Reagan is the beacon of true conservatism and the gold standard as far as I’m concerned… He is the best American president in my lifetime, Donald John Trump would be unfit to even be mentioned in the same sentence as the great RR. End of story. FULL Complete stop
I think Concha’s point is more that Reagan could compromise without being called a RINO and Republicans today can’t. I suspect he thinks that compromise between the parties is more possible today than it really is.
Compromise was possible in Reagan’s day because there were a lot of moderate Democrats, and even some conservative ones. They’d be called DINOs today, if they still were around. So Reagan had a chance of peeling off some Democrats to pass “bipartisan legislation”. That can’t be done now.
Reagan and Trump were both good presidents who also made some mistakes. There’s no need to pit them against each other. Also, “RINO” is overused. Maybe it’s getting to be time to retire it? Everybody is somebody else’s RINO, and politicians have to weigh what the people in their district will accept and what will work in practice. If they want to get reelected they can’t always follow the ideological line someone else lays down.
IBTZ
A little late for that. but then again most of you are not what I call “ahead of the curve thinkers” on FR. It took years before most of you started to realize Jorge W. Arbusto was shite.
Both Reagan and Trump were democrats before they were republicans.
RINOs were rampant over 100 years ago. Teddy R, anyone?
Teddy is the example I fear as a comparison to Donald Trump. Like Trump, Teddy was a much admired and loved President with great accomplishment.
He tried to run and was rejected and formed from scratch the Bull Moose Party and still lost.
He was also our original “Progressive”.
I thought that Woodrow Wilson was the original progressive.
I don't understand why GOPers always want to raise taxes but refuse to discuss a tariff which raises huge revenue, promotes domestic industry and labor? Idiots...
Oh BS. Any R willing to work with this totally whacked out leftist Domonat party is more than a RINO the are traitos. Name one sane Democrat.
“ Reagan was overrated. ”
The Reagan who got the economy going, broke the Soviet Union, rebuilt our military, cut regulation, shrunk government , that Reagan ?
I am with him on antitrust laws and there certainly were other excesses of the time.
That is something like what I said (without all the mistakes). Reagan could work with Democrats because there were still moderate and even conservative Democrats in those days, and now there aren't.
Still, RINO is overused and gets applied to politicians who aren't voting with the Democrats but who just don't go as far as commenters would like. Given what the country's like now, a good part of the Republicans who could get elected will be called RINOs, and they won't be replaced by politicians who are more conservative.
Shut up you yapping dog ankle biter.
That is just the sort of thing a yapping dog ankle biter would say. Try drinking less.
I have great respect for President Teddy Roosevelt and even greater for President Donald Trump.
Both had what is seemingly lacking now in DC, CHARISMA.
The fantastic charismatic appeal of Donald Trump is lacking in all others at present
