Celia Cruz to be first Afro-Latina on US currency

The Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz, will make history by becoming the first Afro-Latina on U.S. currency.

Cruz’s portrait will be featured on a new quarter set to be released in 2024, the U.S. Mint announced earlier this month.

Born in Havana in 1925, the “La Vida es un Carnaval” singer was one of the most popular artists of the 20th century and received numerous accolades for her work, including five Grammy awards and a National Medal of Arts.

Cruz is one of five people being honored by the U.S Mint as part of its American Women Quarters Program, which launched in 2022 and will continue until 2025. The other four women honored are Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to serve in Congress; Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War surgeon and women’s rights activist; Pauli Murray, Civil Rights activist and lawyer; and Zitkala-Ša, a Native American rights and voting activist from the Yankton Sioux Nation.

“All of the women being honored have lived remarkable and multi-faceted lives, and have made a significant impact on our Nation in their own unique way,” said Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson in a statement.

Will all the white guys be removed from our paper currency before gov. switches to all-digital fiat?

No. To really poke us in the eye they'll put Fauci on one of the bills.

James Brown was an American patriot. He gave support for Richard Nixon’s campaign to become President, and performed for troops in Vietnam. He also responded to anti-war protests at the time by recording patriotic songs like “America is My Home”. He is a far better person to adorn U.S. currency than many others.

Castro had a lot of people fooled before the Revolution, he never came out and said he was a Communist until he gained power, when the Soviets made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

This is not to say she shouldn’t be honored, but would she even make the top 100 artists of the 20th century?

She's a musician? When I saw "Salsa Queen" I figured she just made Mexican food.

For music, I figured Astrud Gilberto is closer to being queen, but she isn't American. But neither is Salsa.

“If you’re young and are not a socialist you have no heart.

I have always rejected that statement. The only way one can be a socialist is either to be ignorant or to be evil.

I am Puerto Rican but, primarily, my favorite artists are The Eagles and my tastes revolve around their type of music. But anytime I hear that voice, Celia’s voice, it awakens my Hispanic soul. She’s truly the greatest in her field.

“Is this punishment because we wouldn’t use the Sacajawea and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins?”

A couple of fun facts about both.

The mint produced nearly 900,000,000 S.B. Anthony dollars, which of course the public simply refused to use. So they are in storage which costs a lot every year. Melting them down for their scrap (8 1/2 ¢ per coin) would make sense, but then the mint would have to post a loss of 89 1/2 ¢ per coin and since so many are in storage—a sizable proportion of the entire production, that would add up to real money.

A few years ago Ecuador decided to adopt the U.S. dollar as its currency. They love the Sacagawea dollar because to them she looks just like a native Ecuadorian woman.
