The mint produced nearly 900,000,000 S.B. Anthony dollars, which of course the public simply refused to use. So they are in storage which costs a lot every year. Melting them down for their scrap (8 1/2 ¢ per coin) would make sense, but then the mint would have to post a loss of 89 1/2 ¢ per coin and since so many are in storage—a sizable proportion of the entire production, that would add up to real money.
A few years ago Ecuador decided to adopt the U.S. dollar as its currency. They love the Sacagawea dollar because to them she looks just like a native Ecuadorian woman.
