The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday
Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds
Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority
Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.
The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.
It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.
If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.
He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected
Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

I love peaceful chaos.
More like the GOPe in disarray.
Women, minorities, homosexuals, and the GOPe hardest hit.
Let’s just say the next two years of a Republican Majority in the House will be a letdown for conservatives, again.
From what I’ve seen of Jim Jordan, he would be a big improvement over establishment Mike.
So what’s new?
How about ‘Mostly Peaceful’ chaos?.................
This is a good thing. Two years without Congress would be pretty good!
I wonder if Scalise would be OK.
He’s struck me as much stronger guy, but that may just be because of the shooting.
Excellent! Wouldn't it be great if this process went on for a few years, everybody went home, and we all lived in peace and quiet.
When it gets down to just two remaining candidates (eliminating the low-vote getter each round), what then? Abstain? Is that even allowed? Does the speaker need a majority of House member (218+), or is it a majority of those who voted?
Change will be hard for the Micks.
It’s so sad.
I’d MUCH rather see Jordan as Speaker than McCarthy. But who am I?
It would be nice if the RINOs would fight the democrats at least as hard as they fight fellow conservative Republicans.
Agreed and, if for no other reason than for sending a message to the Deep State.
218........................
If the House stays in a state of Chaos that means they can’t pass any more STUPID bills and cause more harm to this country. Is a little gridlock a bad thing at this point?
Remember Joey has a pen and will sign EOs anyway. He said he doesn’t need Congress. Spoken like a true “Dick-Tater”
I’ve heard it suggested that it’s even possible that that Rat Party filthbag,Hakeem Jeffries, could wind up Speaker.
