When it gets down to just two remaining candidates (eliminating the low-vote getter each round), what then? Abstain? Is that even allowed? Does the speaker need a majority of House member (218+), or is it a majority of those who voted?
218........................
Election to the Speaker post has to be an absolute majority of ALL members of the House. 218 is the magic number.
The good news is, the Democrat Socialists cannot get a majority either.
They can vote present. But they have to be careful that not too many of them do it or Jeffries becomes speaker.
this is what i am curious about- if the repugnicans vote for jefferies, could he become the speaker in spite of the rinos holding the chamber? if anyone can get it, then jefferies already has a significant number behind him. 203 or something. If he just needs to get to 218 then he need only convince the liz-cheney-types to vote for him and the dems are back in power.
A majority of those who vote for a candidate is required for election as Speaker, not a majority of the House(218).
A majority of those in attendance.
