Jacqueline Kennedy's oral history reveals husband's disdain for Lyndon Johnson.
President John F. Kennedy was so "worried for the country" about the prospect that Vice President Lyndon Johnson might succeed him as president that he'd begun having private conversations about who should become the Democratic Party's standard-bearer in 1968, Jacqueline Kennedy recalled in a series of oral-history interviews recorded in early 1964.
She said her husband believed strongly that Johnson shouldn't become president and, in the months before his death in November 1963, he'd begun talking to his brother, Robert Kennedy, about ways to maneuver around Johnson in 1968.
"Bobby told me this later, and I know Jack said it to me sometimes. He said, 'Oh, God, can you ever imagine what would happen to the country if Lyndon was president?'" she said.
The president gave no serious consideration to dropping Johnson from the ticket in 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy recalled. But he did have some talks about how to avoid having Johnson run for president in 1968, at the end of what would have been Kennedy's second term, she said.
"He didn't like that idea that Lyndon would go on and be president because he was worried for the country," she said. "Bobby told me that he'd had some discussions with him. I forget exactly how they were planning or who they had in mind. It wasn't Bobby, but somebody. Do something to name someone else in '68."

LBJ got the drop on Kennedy. Wonder if J. Edgar Hoover tipped him off that he was going to be dumped.
He’s usually doesn’t get the credit, but LBJ is one of our worst presidents. Viet Nam, the war on Poverty... he really left one heckuva legacy. Not to mention that he was personally a lowlife on the order of Bill Clinton.
And now we know - a disaster.
He should have feared an LBJ vice-presidency.
We can add Johnson to the Biden, Obama and Carter list of the worst of the worst.
LBJ got the drop on Kennedy.
“Have you heard?; There’s new footage from the assassination! It shows LBJ’s car. LBJ looks at his watch, notes the time, bends over and covers his ears.”
She absolutely loathed LBJ and Ladybird. She considered them absolute hicks and not worth of being in her social caste strata. Jackie Kennedy was a real snob.
"Do unto others before they do unto you." ~ LBJ?
They were hicks.
The historians at Harvard reserve the top of the worst Presidents lists for republican presidents only.
I’m not arguing that point, I just said she couldn’t stand them anyway.
Grandpa always said LBJ was the most crooked President in history.
Why would he make him VP if he feared his presidency? Even without the assassination, he was giving Johnson a leg up at being president.
Some TX Billionaire (Hunt?), gives the "Go" call to the Deep State hit team, (run by LBJ?).
LBJ's hate for Bobby Kennedy is well established.

But she was good looking though.
I am a lifelong underclass type of man. Government employed family, when that meant they made less than the local laborers union, or the appliance repairman. We didn’t own a car until 1964 and it was a used Packard. LBJ was a horrid man, who would not be allowed in my parents house I can guarantee that. He was loud, crass and a real asshole. Jackie Kennedy was correct, they were not to be seen in good or even average company. His behavior around women made Weinstein look like Pa Ingalls.
Well Kennedy was no prize as he should have never really been President, many in Navy circles wanted to Court Marial him over PT-109 but his father had great influence. His election was more or less was bought by Kennedy money and the Mob’s...
