What happens if the conservative Republicans block McCarthy from getting a majority? (Vanity question)

Hi all,

I think that saying that a Democrat might win the speakership is purely a scare tactic.

From what I am reading, the speaker must win a simple majority of total votes cast, so 218 if all vote. If the dissenting Republicans vote for anyone other than McCarthy there is no way McCarthy can reach majority unless democrats vote for him. Representatives can vote for anyone. They are not limited to choosing between the nominees.

As long as Republicans don’t vote for the Democrat nominee, the Democrat can’t reach majority either. As much as I detest the Rinos, I don’t think they would vote for a democrat.

Even though the dissenting Republicans won’t have enough votes to elect anyone else, they can spoil the speaker election indefinitely.

The worst that would happen if the dissenters stand firm is that there will be no speaker for an indefinite period of time.

Would the Democrats cross over and vote for McCarthy? If so McCarthy still wins speakership, but he wins it having to live with being elected by his opposition.

The outcome wouldn’t change, but at least we would have had some Republicans demonstrate that they actually have backbones.

Best case is that the opposition in the Republican party holds or even grows and they stall the process so long that McCarthy has to withdraw.

What happens after that is anybody’s guess.

I would appreciate it if somebody with more knowledge of the process could jump in here to let me know if this is actually the case.

Love, O2

Right now this all entertainment for me.

Watching the Pubs dance expectantly.

Watching the Dems moan and whine and CYA.

Watching the News ‘wisely’ pontificate for us ‘ignorant’ peons.

I am operating in the mode that things will not get better.

If they do, then good (for now); if not I am not surprised.

Back in Egypt, during the Biblical plagues, the Egyptians recognized that God was causing the problems, and they cursed Him.

In Revelation, during the plagues, the people again recognize that God causes the problems, and they will blaspheme Him.

In between, where we are now, people are not even considering that God is bringing judgment, or ‘plagues’. I think they will. I don’t know what will trigger the shift from Climate Change, Mother Nature, and Gaia to God. Then we will hear cursing and blasphemy. And on the balance, some will want to learn about and know this God. That will be pretty exciting - scary on earth, exciting in the Heavenlies.

Maybe Kevin will pull it off, by the slimmest 218, with all kinds of deals, promises, threats, blackmails, etc.

Nancy will then give him the gavel with a smile on her face.

He will be worthless, the biggest RINO that ever was.

I don’t think the Dems need to vote for him. I think they can just stay home and not vote. Reducing the number of members voting will lower the threshold for victory enough that McStatist can win with 217,216,215…whatever he is able to get. The Dems will play along to get a globalist and avoid a nationalist leader.

Not a huge McCarthy fan here but he is the best option at this time.

Otherwise we will have a Dem as the speaker. Will there be enough RINOs to vote for a Dem? Possibly. I'd rather not take the chance. No need for a circular firing squad at this time.

Unfortunately I am not a member of Congress, so I don’t get to vote.

Could you lay out a scenario where Biggs gets to 218 before Pelosi or Jeffries gets to 4?

After what we've seen from the RINOs in recent years, I wouldn't put it past them to vote for a Democrat.

Then democrats can try to get 4 republicans to vote with them and have house leader Jeffries as speaker. I’m sure there are talks going on as we speak.

“Would the Democrats cross over and vote for McCarthy?”

Considering Trump endorsed McCarthy for Speaker, would Dems cross over and backs Trump’s guy? Interesting question.

He’s 82. But the odds of the Congresscritters choosing someone who is not currently one of their own are roughly up there with the Cardinals selecting a non-Cardinal for the Papacy.

You guys are crazy.

I regard it as a CERTAINTY that 4 Republicans would vote for Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker before thye would vote for anyone acceptable to the Freedom Caucus.

Jeffries (or Pelosi) already has 214 votes. McCarthy doesn't have 218.

The question for you is, can McCarthy get 30 before Jeffries (or Pelosi) gets 4?

Presuming the margin hold with 220-213 GOP lead, 5 RINOs plus every Rat could pick a speaker. While there are likely at least 5 allegedly GOP Reps left who might prefer some Rat speaker to a hardcore conservative MAGA one, how many are willing to vote so in public. It would almost certainly mean they’re out after this term unless they full on switch parties. There are only 2 GOP left that were willing to vote to impeach Trump. Those two plus three who already planned to retire at next election might to it, but it’s easier for them to vote for RINO McCarthy and claim McCarthy is conservative to their voters.
