Police in Moscow, Idaho, tried to calm growing community concerns Wednesday about the killings of four University of Idaho students – even as police said they did not have a suspect in custody and declined to provide the public further information.
“We hear you, and we understand your fears,” the Moscow Police Department said in a news release. “We want you to know that we, like you, have been devastated and distressed by these young lives that were cut short needlessly.
“We determined early in the investigation that we do not believe there is an ongoing threat for community members. Evidence indicates that this was a targeted attack.”
That evidence has not been shared with the public, and police said they have shared everything they can without compromising the investigation. Police also said they hope to have more information Wednesday, and a press conference is scheduled for the afternoon.
The statement comes days after the four college students were found dead in an off-campus residence. No weapons have been found but police said preliminary information led them to believe an “edged weapon” like a knife was used in the quadruple homicide.
he killings and lack of information have rankled Moscow, a 25,000-strong city nestled on the Idaho-Washington border. Residents there are anxious and are “getting out of Dodge,” Latah County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Mikolajczyk told the Idaho Statesman.
The father of one of the victims issued a statement Wednesday calling on police to release further information about the killings.
“There is a lack of information from the University of Idaho and the local police, which only fuels false rumors and innuendo in the press and social media,” Jim Chapin, the father of Ethan Chapin, said in the statement...

Pretty strange and brutal. The local LE is holding a press conf at 3:30 (6:30 eastern). I think the pressure is pretty intense on them.
There are several quotes from various LE and coroner saying it was a bad scene- the bloodiest and worst they’d ever seen. A photo from Fox and Daoly Mail shows blood dripping down the side of house. Gruesome. All that ads up to people panicking.
visions of Sharon Tate and Helter Skelter running through my mind as I read about this
I considered that but the stabbing angle dissuaded me.
Plus, there aren't a whole lot of black people in Moscow, Idaho. 1.6%. Blacks tend to behave more when they're so underrepresented in the general population.
I suspect that there are excellent reasons for not naming any suspects. It will be most interesting to find out.
Awful crime. Sorry for the rels and the community.
They know who he is, he is either freezing in the woods, dead by suicide, or hiding in his frat house basement.

I hope they catch the perp(s) ASAP.
How could only one person stab these four people to death? I can see being able to kill four with a gun, but stabbing?
The only black face people in Idaho are on the Boise State basketball and football teams.
One at a time quietly.
Reminds me of the Villisca Axe Murders in 1912. No one was ever brought to justice. The mother and father, and children in their beds. I think with today’s advancement in forensics they should find the killer.

Idaho police ask for calm after quadruple homicide
WTH it’s like someone telling the bleeding you have will stop on it’s own.
I’m guessing so people wouldn’t be confused about who was murdered.
This is Idaho. There isn’t much of that feeling here. The rest of the insane world with that feeling feels a million miles away. This is our safe little corner of the world.
“I’m guessing ex-boyfriend.”
That was my first guess, too. Or a guy who was spurned by one of the young ladies multiple times.
My mom and dad went to the U of I in the late 40s and got married in Moscow in 1947. Moscow has always been a wonderful little town. Mom was from an even smaller nearby Idaho town, Potlatch.
The statement that there is no risk to the public is utter BS. The police want us to believe that a person had some sort of reason to target these kids and brutally murder them, is also capable of shutting down or holding their emotions, and or keeping their mental state in check, that will prevent that person from ever doing something like this again.
Got it.
Almost 90% white, 1.7% black.
“Killing four young women...”
It was 3 women and a man this time.
“I’m pretty sure there is a story of a guy in recent past who killed one roommate and then waited until the others showed up...”
Hmm, Richard Speck and Ted Bundy both did something like that, Speck with nursing students and Bundy with sorority girls.
The boyfriend and girlfriend were found in the same room together. Maybe they were asleep when attacked.
