Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

I’ve been through more storms to remember (by the beach in Juno since the mid-80’s), and it seems to me that the Gulf (both sides) dishes out more storm surge than the Atlantic.

I liken this storm to Andrew - had it hit Ft. Lauderdale instead of Homestead. But even well south of Miami (the universal sea level city joke), there wasn’t anything like what we’re watching.

Even though I don’t live in California now, when we had earthquakes or fires or mudslides, I didn’t appreciate caustic remarks. There are still many good and decent people in California.

150 mph sustained winds = CAT 4

Equivalent EF 3 tornado winds are 136 mph to 165 mph for perspective.

A few years ago I attended a national business meeting in the Ft. Myers area. Wonderful hotel right on the beach. Beautiful part of town. Delightful meeting with really nice weather.

Sad to think of it being ripped apart by a hurricane.

Visited Pine Island two years ago. Nice area, the locals all described it as ‚Old Florida‘. Hope everyone is okay.

Right! This is the best and most informative hurricane thread.

Thank you, nauti nurse, and all on-location contributors.

I’ve either read somewhere or was told that the Gulf has a very gradual depth gradient for a long way offshore. Allegedly, this allows a higher surge buildup.

Hate the weather, love your threads, Nauti.

Northwest 30-40 min of O-Town and the theme parks. Wind gusts are starting to pick up, maybe 40-50 mph or so, otherwise overcast but bright. Intermittent rain. Looks like the worst will be for us here in the Thursday AM.

150 mph

I've experienced Typhoon Rose in 1971 with 105 mph winds and Typhoon Hope in 1979 with 145 mph winds in Hong Kong, both inside an apartment building built to withstand typhoon weather. The very loud winds and extremely intense rain is something you don't want to experience again anytime soon.

The storm surge is so powerful from #HurricaneIan that it has brought a shark into the city streets of Fort Myers.
