Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

NN, my prayers are with you. We have been through a lot of storms together and you have been a blessing.

I am near Jupiter and near the ocean. Our’s was a rain event with quite a few tornado warnings and possibly water spouts over the ocean. We are mostly done. I know this isn’t much consolation for you but my thoughts are with you and my west coasters.

One of my science professors used to tell us that there was no such thing as an “Expert” when it came to meteorology, only varying degrees of ignorance.

What we still don’t know about God’s creation amazes me.

Biggest issue would be flooding, not the winds

Yea.. that's what I told them. Wind, and even rain flooding is survivable. a 10-12 ft storm surge may not be.

They are in the Bonita Springs area. I'm not sure what the elevation is there, but it can't be very high. I'm not one who likes to evacuate... at least, I wasn't when I was younger. But, I'm not riding out a Cat 4 or above on land that is within 10 miles of the coast or less than 20' elevation.

What is interesting is this was taken immediately as tree was hit - in left hand corner you see how fast that fire lifted into the air sending fire into the air....whle the tree again ignites at same time.....amazing photo! This was in seconds!

A tree caught fire as a result of a lightning strike in Delray Beach

Ain’t that the truth! My professor used to say to me that an education doesn’t tell you everything. It just tells you how much you still don’t know! lol

12-18 ft?

All those coastal communities gonna be completely underwater.

Why folks within eyesight of ocean or bayfront “ride it out” is beyond me when they see a big hurricane coming

Ivan was 2004. I was talking with my cousin who lives in an inland suburb of Tampa last night. He’s not that worried but he’s on high ground and 57 miles from the bay. He has storm shutters and a generator.

We just put a 38 foot travel trailer on our property in Habersham but its out in an open area with no trees around. I don’t think thirty mph gusts will do anything to it.

Florida is going to get a strong wind/water surges. Hopefully
they are prepared and in safe locations. I’ve been thru a few
in my lifetime and have had major damage to a house I had left
for the storm. Fortunately insurance took care of the damage.
I was out of the property for about six months.

The barrier islands are going to be swamped, there's no riding it out there unless you're in a 3rd floor condo or higher and like to do w/o electricity.

"They are in the Bonita Springs area. I'm not sure what the elevation is there, but it can't be very high."

I did a quick search and came up with 10 foot elevation. That sounds about right as an average. We have a loved one with a place in Bonita Springs that's 2 miles from open ocean and about 1-3/4 miles from the bay. I doubt he's at 10 feet elevation. The house is pre-Andrew. I think he'll be mighty glad it's not his primary residence.

A lot of people and animals will need help after Ian is done with them.
