NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll: Majorities oppose Supreme Court's abortion ruling and worry about other rights; Dems surge to seven-point lead on generic ballot

Majorities of Americans say they disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, think it was politically motivated, are concerned the court will now reconsider rulings that protect other rights, and are more likely to vote for a candidate this fall who would restore the right to an abortion, according to the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

Still, a majority opposes expanding the number of justices who could sit on the Supreme Court.

In overturning Roe on Friday, the Supreme Court reversed 50 years of precedent that had made abortion a right in this country. The right to regulate abortion now is in states' hands, and about half the states have already moved to severely curtail access to an abortion or ban the procedure outright.

The issue is personal to most Americans. Two-thirds of people responding to the poll say they or someone they know has had an abortion. That was true of three-quarters of independents, 7-in-10 Democrats and 55% of Republicans.

Surveys have for years shown consistently that most Americans wanted to keep Roe in place and to see restrictions on when abortions could take place. What the court did is clearly outside the mainstream of public opinion, and that is reflected again in the NPR poll.

The survey of 941 respondents, conducted Friday after the decision through Saturday, has a margin of error of +/-4.9 percentage points.

A majority are against the decision

By a 56%-to-40% margin, respondents oppose the court's decision, including 45% who strongly oppose it.

Almost 9-in-10 Democrats and a slim majority of independents (53%) are against the decision. Three-quarters of Republicans, on the other hand, support it.

Your doom is failing.

Look at the previous Marist polls.

With the exception of their April poll, a massive D lead (and much larger in many) in every single one of their polls going back to 2014.

I think the TV has been telling people that the USSC imposed a national ban on abortions, and too many believe that.

Exactly.

There's an incredible number of people on Twitter right now who believe that Abortion in the United States became illegal on Friday.

Come November when gas and inflation are through the roof, most Americans will find that abortion laws in most states didn't really change that much.

I'd like to think that the Dobbs decision will not have much of an affect on the midterms, particularly with the economy in tatters. I just don't think that many people view abortion as an issue of major importance, and most of those that do, vote pro-life.

But I could be wrong.

That poll was taken before Roe vs Wade decision.

It could be true, and if it were, we full on deserve whatever God allows to happen to America. We are begging for it.

the only people that are going to be voting on Abortion this November at the far left feminazi kooks

Correct.

But lots more people are going to be voting on "Have sex with whoever you want, as much as you want, however you want, without regard to any previous commitments or obligations, and make sure society holds you blameless and pays for whatever consequences may follow".

This is what the issue of "abortion" is about for the average voter.

And a lot of voters are very, very average.

7-point lead my rear end! Snicker, even were that true, we have many months between now and election day for the reality of inflationary grocery bills, gas prices, ruinous stock market, imploding consumer sentiment and Biden’s yammering and drip-spittle prone mouth to get the electorate focused on that which truly damages them and their well being.

We will continue to see this sort of propaganda to mask the steal of the mid terms.

How much do you want to bet that the polling doesn’t change much?

Traflagar has the Rs up by 11 in the generic ballot tonite - 49 to 38. They have an excellent polling record - Marist is very tilted to the Dems and has a horrible predictive record.

Michael Savage said something along those lines on one of his podcasts. He said it was the right decision but the wrong time.

NPR is doing its job. Polls are not to MEASURE public opinion, but to STEER public opinion.
