Washington police say drivers aren’t stopping for them

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says drivers are increasingly refusing to stop for troopers - and other law enforcement agencies also say this is becoming a common occurrence.

“Something’s changed. People are not stopping right now,” said Sgt. Darren Wright, a WSP spokesperson with 31 years on the job.

Steve Strachan and others in law enforcement connect the increase in failures-to-yield to passage last year of House Bill 1054, a sweeping police tactics law that, among other things, barred high-speed pursuits except in very limited circumstances.

The law was part of a package of police reforms majority Democrats passed in response to the murder by police of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other high-profile police killings — reforms aimed at addressing racial disproportionality in policing.

Minority Republicans in the Legislature criticized many of the changes, including the pursuit law, and said they jeopardized public safety.

Strachan said he doesn’t dispute the need for statewide rules governing police pursuits, but thinks the new law went too far.

Under the new law, police officers can’t give chase unless there’s reasonable suspicion to believe the driver is impaired or the higher standard of probable cause to believe they’re an escaped felon or have committed a violent crime or a sex crime.

“that I’d like to see”

It was on the nightly news, well before the ubiquitous internet. I did look for it. There are lots of vids of women crying while getting arrested, but not that one.

Maybe they don’t have enough ‘counselors’ on their payroll who can handle the workload. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.

Oh, incidentally. The TPD took the press along with them to the neighborhoods likely to generate the we’re back in business story. As I recall the practice of ramming police cars (and setting off airbags) stopped instantly after the night they released a bunch of videos on the news.

That uncle sounds like those morons who brake check large trucks on the freeway. That usually ends with the truck body-checking the idiot into the jersey wall or onto the shoulder, because he couldn’t slow down fast enough.

We have some here on this very forum who are apologists for those who refuse to stop for police.

Can’t say that i blame the drivers.

I’d take my chances with a known criminal before doing so with a member of the Washington State Patrol (just keeping it real).

Didn’t Washington legalize crime, so what’s the problem?

The Democrat-Communists are going to be so surprised when they are taught that anarchy cuts both ways.

Some of those will be stolen cars - not actually the owner’s fault. How is it fair to punish them? (Yes, this is the long running conundrum with just recording licenses and not pursuing a fleeing vehicle. A dishonest person can claim the vehicle was stolen when the police go to their house - if they return without it - but an honest person would be penalized if the car really was stolen.)

Of course, there’s actually now a technological solution to people fleeing in cars and not stopping - but WA police (or their political masters) are too PC, too stupid or too cheap to buy them because it’s remarkably effective in ending a pursuit and *forcing* the vehicle to stop.

Turn their liscence plate number to the DMV.

Revoke their registration unless they comply, what ever that would be for the case.

But, then they drive with no valid registration.

And won’t pull over for that.

In Washington, you can hardly find enough POCs to make a quorum. It's a problem for the Left. They NEED oppressed minorities, and the original settlers didn't listen.

So, they substituted with the sexually ambiguous.

Democrats have promoted a lawless society honoring a criminal thug George Floyd, promoting anarchy, ignoring lawlessness in riots, subsidizing attorneys and judges that won’t uphold the law, ignoring shoplifting and theft up to $999, early prisoner release, and I could go on and on. Democrats are pushing for a societal collapse. Wake up folks!

It’s getting worse around here. I just got home from repairing my office door after another break in early this morning. I manage a self storage facility just outside of Tacoma. I leave nothing of value behind anymore. It all comes with me. Last time they got the new guitar I hadn’t even had for a week! This time they left empty handed. I hate these people.

In other news, I think it was just a week or so ago that I read that police (in some location I don’t recall) were advising people to drive to a ‘safe public location’ like a shopping mall etc. if they get pulled over. Apparently, there had been a number of instances were it wasn’t actually the police doing the pulling over....

New law: police can’t chase you at a high speed, so you only have to stop if you want to, or your vehicle isn’t able to make 80 mph or better. What could possibly go wrong with this? The coppers can just mail you a citation later and you can show up at court if you want to.

And then there were the scandals involving the red light camera vendors getting a cut of ticket revenue so they recommended and got shortened yellows.
