Will Congress act on guns after Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Uvalde?
The Associated Press ^ | May 25, 2022 | By LISA MASCARO (D-AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer swiftly set in motion a pair of firearms background-check bills Wednesday in response to the school massacre in Texas. But the Democrat acknowledged Congress’ unyielding rejection of previous legislation to curb the national epidemic of gun violence.

Schumer implored his Republican colleagues to cast aside the powerful gun lobby and reach across the aisle for even a modest compromise bill. But no votes are being scheduled.

“Please, please, please damnit - put yourselves in the shoes of these parents just for once,” Schumer said as he opened the Senate.

He threw up his hands at the idea of what might seem an inevitable outcome: “If the slaughter of schoolchildren can’t convince Republicans to buck the NRA, what can we do?”

The killing of at least 19 children plus a teacher at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, has laid bare the political reality that the U.S. Congress has proven unwilling or unable to pass substantial federal legislation to curb gun violence in America.

In many ways, the end of any gun violence legislation in Congress was signaled a decade ago when the Senate failed to approve a firearms background check bill after twenty 6- and 7-year-olds were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Despite the outpouring of grief Wednesday after the starkly similar Texas massacre, it’s not at all clear there will be any different outcome.

“We are accepting this as the new normal,” lamented Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on “CBS Mornings.” “It’s our choice.”

I think the Dems have figured out that if they cannot get rid of the guns which would stop them in American society, then they will remake that society to be unfit to be armed.

We need to reopen insane asylums and populate them with individuals whose family, teachers, fellow students, co-workers, and acquaintances are aware of serious mental or drug-related problems well before such individuals go over the edge and start a killing rampage.... or vote Demonicrat.

[[ANOTHER SCHOOL LEFT UNPROTECTED BY DEMOCRATS AND CHILDREN ARE KILLED.]]

Republicans must get this very message out loud and clear and repeat it over and over like the left do- this is exactly why these shooting keep happening- because liberals REFUSE to do what is necessary to protect the kids- ie, secure the schools-

Hello old FR friend Lazamataz. I remember you all the way back in 1999 here at FR. I’ve been trying to get Freeper Bryan to come back to FR but he’s been VERY busy.

I have a modest proposal: a national firearms owner ID (FOID) card.

You can apply for it 3 months before your 16th birthday. You get a thorough background check, a drug screening & thorough psych evaluation at federal expense. It gets issued and mailed on your 16th birthday if you pass.

You can buy a .22 rifle or a pump shotgun at 16, any type of legal long arm at 18, any type of handgun at 21, as well as the respective types of ammo at the corresponding ages. It functions as an open carry license at 18 and concealed carry permit at 21 in all 50 states.

It can be revoked or suspended by the BATF or FBI upon any conviction for a violent felony, or diagnosis of a mental disorder that presents a risk to the public or card owner. Petitioners in active orders of protection can get an expedited screening process, maximum 24 hrs, including the psych evaluation. If they can’t find anything negative, the card gets issued and FedExed in 24 hrs.

Any gun or ammo seller, including private parties, can check online using the card ID number to see whether it’s valid. Takes about 60 seconds. If it’s been suspended or revoked, no sale. If it’s valid, you can walk out of the gun store with whatever you can afford, with no waiting period.

No expiration date.

We have an FOID card here in Illinois, a deep blue state due to Chicago. (I wish there were a way to run a chainsaw along the Chicago city limits and shove it off into Lake Michigan, so that it’ll graft onto the @$$ of Michigan.)

I have an IL FOID card. My sister, due to her employment, has a CCP. It’s not hard to get, you just have to dot all your I’s and cross all your T’s. This would satisfy the gun grabbers (I think), without violating any constitutional rights.

No assault weapons ban. But anyone who uses a firearm in the commission of a violent felony gets it revoked for life, and gets life in prison with no parole. Anyone who sells a gun, or ammo, to someone with no valid FOID card gets 10 years with no parole. Per offense. Consecutive sentencing.

What do you think?

At 18 you are considered an adult. You are afforded your full constitutional rights unless you forfeit them. For that matter, you can join the military and risk your life for your country while utilizing true assault weapons. I can’t go for any infringements.

You and I will have to disagree on this. Twenty one is the legal age for alcohol which can be argued too. Also 21 to buy tobacco and 25 at most agencies to rent a car. Three years at this level (18-21) makes a big difference in maturity and an equally big difference in acting on impulse by a young person, especially when an action in harming another with a weapon is so final. BTW, I'm not anti-gun; I own a weapon.

It is, indeed, time to act. All those mass school shootings were in GFZs. It’s time to restore the defensive rights of teachers, and put fear into the hearts of would-be shooters that they won’t be finding soft targets any more.

We can agree to disagree. That’s fine. I’ll end with this.

The constitution doesn’t talk about alcohol (other than the poorly thought-out amendment), tobacco, or rent a cars.

Typical. First instinct after tragedy, score political points, then pretend to want to ban guns,,,,, while keeping their own armed guards in place.

Here’s an idea... Fathers volunteering for revolving shifts at schools... 1 father per door.

I still want to know if this guy forced his way into this school... .I can’t get anyone to answer that question.

I haven’t been to a school in well over a decade that hasn’t required someone to let me in...

If this guy didn’t somehow force his way into this school I wan’t to know how he got in..

Despicable Schumer rushes to use the killings to go after guns. The problem is Schumer, the godless amongst our young adults obtain guns to get revenge on some perceived hurt or slight. Mentally ill are the problems not guns. I knew when Schumer was elected to Senator he would be a major thorn in America’s sides. The shooters are the issue.

Do not go after the guns, go for means to foil the potential attacker entering a gun-free zone with loaded weapons.

Make schools single-entry point areas, with something called a “man-trap” at the entry during school hours. A Man Trap consists of a set of two interlocking doors that cannot be open simultaneously. Enter first door, and the first door has to close before the second door can be opened. Keep this vestibule area under constant video surveillance, and put the entry and passage doors under the control of an operator. The outer door may open, but the passage door cannot.

The operator can be the school resource officer, preferably trained in use of and carrying weapons of some kind. This alone will provide a precious few minutes of stalling the prospective attacker, and may spell the difference between a massacre and a capture, until the authorities arrive.

The $40 billion Biden gave to Ukraine could have installed all those systems you mention in every school in the nation.

Act on guns by depriving law-abiding American citizens of their constitutional right to bear arms?

No. Instead, we should act on guns by depriving Rosicrucians of their right to practice their religion. That sounds good to me. America doesn't need those nasty Rosicrucians running around, doing whatever it is that they do.
