Will Congress act on guns after Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Uvalde?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer swiftly set in motion a pair of firearms background-check bills Wednesday in response to the school massacre in Texas. But the Democrat acknowledged Congress’ unyielding rejection of previous legislation to curb the national epidemic of gun violence.

Schumer implored his Republican colleagues to cast aside the powerful gun lobby and reach across the aisle for even a modest compromise bill. But no votes are being scheduled.

“Please, please, please damnit - put yourselves in the shoes of these parents just for once,” Schumer said as he opened the Senate.

He threw up his hands at the idea of what might seem an inevitable outcome: “If the slaughter of schoolchildren can’t convince Republicans to buck the NRA, what can we do?”

The killing of at least 19 children plus a teacher at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, has laid bare the political reality that the U.S. Congress has proven unwilling or unable to pass substantial federal legislation to curb gun violence in America.

In many ways, the end of any gun violence legislation in Congress was signaled a decade ago when the Senate failed to approve a firearms background check bill after twenty 6- and 7-year-olds were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Despite the outpouring of grief Wednesday after the starkly similar Texas massacre, it’s not at all clear there will be any different outcome.

“We are accepting this as the new normal,” lamented Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on “CBS Mornings.” “It’s our choice.”

another great point- We need ‘common sense illegal alien laws” to prevent far far more deaths than mass shooters do- illegal aliens kill apprx 9200 people every year- while mass shootings happen once or so per decade- but the left isn’t screaming for illegal alien control- They are pure hypocrites-

If Congress acts, they should stop armed guards for their security.

Hey Cryin' Chuck are you referring to the parents of the children of color in Chicago?

Democrats: “A crazy person did something insane so we need to punish a bunch of blameless sane people!"

The Buffalo shooter actually cut the heads off cats.

Biden would actually have been much more successfully focused on a real solution, if he asked for strict monitoring (and institutionalizing) of people who tortured and killed animals for pleasure.

Paid his money, passed a background check and walked out with his legally purchased firearms. Minority report isn’t here yet, so no one predicted he’d do this evil deed.

Personally, like for handguns I wouldn't have a problem with prohibiting all 18-20 year old persons buying any weapons except maybe just a single hunting rifle. Any other prohibitions I would oppose.

American now has the strictest gun laws it has ever had in its history. What part of “let’s do more of what didn’t work” do these people not get?

updated to stress the diff between mass shooting deaths and illegal alien attacks which result in deaths

another great point- We need ‘common sense illegal alien laws” to prevent far far more deaths than mass shooters do- illegal aliens kill apprx 9200 people every year- while mass shootings happen once or so per decade- and result in approx 10 or so deaths, tragic as they are, but they pale in comparison to the deaths caused by illegal aliens- but the left isn’t screaming for illegal alien control- They are pure hypocrites-

I recall reading about how Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were fascinated by animal cruelty (in addition to Nazism and related things).

Instead of wasting money teaching kids CRT and other crap like trans BS, they need to spend money on protection for the kids.

God I hope so. Biden’s “gun-free zone” legislation needs to be repealed. We need to arm and train teachers to defend their students.

At 18 you are considered an adult. You are afforded your full constitutional rights unless you forfeit them. For that matter, you can join the military and risk your life for your country while utilizing true assault weapons. I can’t go for any infringements.

All Republicans and 2nd Amendment supporters have to do is repeat the following every time there’s a school shooting:

ANOTHER SCHOOL LEFT UNPROTECTED BY DEMOCRATS AND CHILDREN ARE KILLED.

Until Democrats allow schools to have armed protection, these killings will continue.
