As the pilot shortage continues to rock the airline industry, carriers are struggling to fulfill their flight schedules, and some are even trying to reduce required training hours to get more pilots in the air.
On May 13, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci apologized in a YouTube video for continued flight cancellations that have been plaguing the carrier. Minicucci blamed the pilot shortage, saying "we had 63 fewer pilots than what we planned for when we built our scheduled," which caused a "ripple effect."
"By the time we caught this error, April and May schedules were bid on by our pilots and flight attendants, making it impossible to sufficiently adjust schedules to avoid cancellations," he continued.

Hunter Harrison has been dead for 4-1/2 years so the bad guy at CSX must be somebody else.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Hunter_Harrison: “He died on December 16, 2017, two days after taking medical leave from CSX.”
Man did I call this in 2020 when they were downsizing staff .
I knew the demand would come back and they would have a staffing clusterBiden when demand picked up.
They were cutting staff that takes multiple years to train, for a temporary demand drop.
Dumb.
Should have figured out any way to keep them on the payroll through the slow times.
My friend is a big shot with the FAA, we are currently running about 14,000 pilots short every month, and it is going to get much worse since there are not enough Instructors to train new pilots. Spirit will put you in the left seat of an A320 with just 1500 hours under your belt
Another reason to add to my list of why I don’t want to do any air travel again.
America has become a non stop clown show.
Delta pilots had a picket line going recently.
They make $190K - $350K/year with benefits. I sure wish my eyesight hadn’t been crap since i was 12 years old! Flying would have beat the hell out of working for relative serf wages.
Someone I know (female) became a United pilot over 20 years ago and she is now a captain. She got in via affirmative action because she only had private civil aviation flying time and ratings - no military or corporate flying. The airlines have had pilot affirmative action for women and minorities for a long time - I’m not sure why this became such a front burner issue recently, with their HR people mouthing off about it as if it did not already exist.
And in that short time....March 2017 to his death, the man set about destroying the company as he did CN and CP. The crew he brought with him, that helped him tear apart other companies, continued his policies. So, he was able to do it from the grave, so to speak.
Interestingly, Hilal and Harrison shopped their MO to the other big railroads. They told them to pound salt up their a$$es.
NS, eventually tried to copy that management style. Now they’re sucking for employees as is CSX.
Sad but perfect description.
Is your friend smart? Hard working? Will she sue the company for millions if she feels she is being discriminated because of her skin color or sex or sexual identity? Or be honest enough to know that she failed a test because she didn’t study hard enough?
Your friend may have got in because United wanted to increase the number of women pilots, but she wasn’t hired to meet “modern day diversity, ESG, woke culture quotas”. The affirmative action of 20 years ago is like a picnic compared to what is being pushed today.
You obviously have no clue how many time the airlines have stabbed their pilots in the back since deregulation.
“He started by blaming all of the employees for not working hard enough ....”
Remember the old buzz phrase, “We’re going to do more with less!”
No. You are going to do less with less.
Good point. That is true, the new AA is quite a different thing.
Gee Willis, what caused this “ shortage”
given that lots of folks are still not traveling
Indeed, the vax etc. airlines went political woke and lowered actual standards.
Total corruption.
Airlines got what is coming to them.

Surely there are more Muslims that will gladly take the jobs.
Black check
Female check
LBQGT check
You’re hired!
Remember those were the reasons the new press secretary was hired and it was a good thing!
One of the problems is that some airlines (I think United was one, I’m not sure about Delta) have declared that their pilots have to be 50% “minority” by a certain date.
I don’t know the date, and I don’t know if “minority” includes women as well. But that’s sure not going to make recruiting any easier...or flying any safer.
Airlines, please recruit based on skills and not on race or sex.
Overlook my lousy eyesight at 52 years old and I’m there!
My kid is currently a flight instructor building up his hours to be able to work for the airlines. Already hired by a Delta regional airline as soon as he finishes his 1500 hours. He’ll be the at the ripe old age of 24 when he starts flying for the airlines.
But trust me, if his Xbox skills are any indication, he will be an awesome pilot.
