Authorities: Hate against Taiwanese led to church attack
Yahoo News ^ | 5/16/2022 | ap

A gunman in a deadly attack at a Southern California church was a Chinese immigrant motivated by hate for Taiwanese people, authorities said.

The shooter killed Dr. John Cheng, 52, and wounded five others during a lunch held by Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which worships at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, authorities said at a Monday news conference.

The man had the misfortune of being a child during turbulent “interesting times” when there was considerable resentment by the locals against the new ROC government and the mainlanders.

At some point, his family or he (we don’t know when) moved here to start a new life away from all that, probably worked hard to achieve the American Dream, owned his apartment building, then wham, beaten nearly to death by a tenant, suffers brain damage (and possible PTSD) from it, his life unravels and he loses everything.

At some point, he started blaming the Taiwanese who had been less than welcoming in his childhood. Perhaps in his deranged mind, gone back to childhood, he/his family would not have left for America had they not been so unkind, and he would not have ended up in such a sorry state. Yeah, that’s it. Blame those nasty islanders.

So off he went to shoot innocent Taiwanese church members. For all we know, the people he killed and injured came here for the very same reason he did. It’s nuts. Plain nuts. And tragic for all the victims and families.

I worked with a guy from Taiwan who was a scion of a high-level family in the Chinese Nationalist government. He thought extremely highly of himself and expected others to recognize his superiority.

He is only 52, so he was born in Taiwan in 1970, meaning his parents couldn’t have been very old in 1970, so were probably quite young when they left China, and not necessarily ROC stalwarts.

“Chou’s family was among many that were apparently forcibly removed from China to Taiwan sometime after 1948, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. Chou’s hatred toward the island, documented in hand-written notes that authorities found, seems like it began when he felt he wasn’t treated well while living there.”

This is absurd. No one was forcibly removed from China to Taiwan. The opposite in fact.

More people wanted to escape to Taiwan than did.

Chou, 68, would have been born in Taiwan well after his family went there.

I thought this was the defense, but it’s an incompetent DA trying to make a hate crime case.

Thanks for pointing this tidbit out.

Actually he wasn’t born in 1947 and wouldn’t even have known about 228 until he was an adult when it stopped being illegal to talk about it.

228 is more a reason Taiwanese hate the Chinese who took over after Japan’s surrender. 228 was a purge of Taiwanese over months after the Feb 288 incident. 20 - 40 thousand Taiwanese disappeared after midnight knocks on the door.

I’ve run into scions of powerful families from several countries, including our own, who were arrogant jerks like that. It would seem Mr. Chou’s family was not high and mighty enough to be insulated from the islanders’ resentment back in the 1950s or so when he was a child if his memories were that bad, but we don’t really know that. Most of the mainlanders were ordinary people, civilian and soldier.

Some of the soldiers may well have been brutalized during the long years of fighting first the Japanese, then the civil war against the communists and the islanders suffered from that in the beginning. It rather sounds that way judging from what transpired in 1947.

Taiwan had been under Japanese colonial rule since 1895 until the Allies handed it over to the ROC after WWII. (Japanese rule started out decidedly on the brutal side, too, but had much improved by the 1930s.) One can see why the islanders were hostile towards the mainlanders (and the Allies, who had been bombing them), and perhaps why the mainlanders were not pleased the islanders (who had fought in the Japanese Army against them and who seemed to have preferred Japanese rule to the ROC). The Chinese curse of “interesting times” indeed.

You’re mixing up churches.

This was a Taiwanese church, services in Taiwanese, that rented out the facilities of the church for their services.

It was all Taiwanese.

Another fallen (from owning the apartment building in which he lived to being evicted from it is quite a fall!) person who was failed by all the highly touted, lavishly funded, social services of the left. Seems like they’ve interacted in the past with every crazy mass shooter, pronounced all of them sane enough to release, and not worthy of triggering their red flag laws. All the while whining we need more red flag laws for them to ignore. While every norm who’d interacted with the perps knew they were dangerous lunatics. Then, having completely failed to follow thru on their looney bin emptying “safely” promises the left blame us for their free range loons.

Sorry, I was a bit to harsh in my initial comment. Your knowledge is good.

But the idea that mainlanders were abused by the locals isn’t historically accurate.

The opposite was more true, to the extent it happened.

Not getting the same outrage from keyboard warriors from big media like the attack in Buffalo

The Left pays attention to white mass shooters. The Right pays attention to black mass shooters. No one really pays much attention to anyone else.

Case in point: Not much attention on Raymond Spencer who shot multiple people randomly in D.C. last month. He also was on 4chan, but he was Filipino.

Of course he wasn’t born yet in 1947. All we know is he had had bad memories from childhood. Just because no one could talk about it publicly, it doesn’t follow that the islanders didn’t express their resentment in other ways.

It was a terrible time for the islanders. It probably wasn’t exactly a fun time for children born to the hated mainlanders, even though those children had committed no crimes.

The Japanese camps for Allied POWs on Taiwan were horrific. Senior wardens/tormentors were Japanese, junior prison guards/tormentors were Taiwanese.

Nobody was lily white and all-good.

Chou’s age is listed as 68 in every article I have seen, meaning he was born in 1954. If that is incorrect, please provide a link.

Oops, sorry for double post! I see the confusion now. Cheng, the heroic doctor murdered by Chou was 52.

Chou, the shooter, is 68.

I didn’t say they were abused. I said they were resented.

Yes, the poor islanders suffered brutality during the first decades of Japanese colonial rule starting 1895, then again subjected to a new and brutalized/brutal regime after WWII whose opening decades were no fun at all. It’s no wonder they resented their new overlords.

The kids born not so long after? Well, we know how kids can be. If the parents resent the new outlanders, the kids sense it and ... the outlander kids aren’t liked and feel alienated. It wasn’t the kids’ fault, they probably were confused by it all, but it was what it was.

Your idea that there was any sort of burden put on waiguoren by Taiwanese (I now have the feeling you know the waiguoren term) is nonsense.

Other things you’re saying also have the ChiCom taint.

You’re giving yourself away.

You are making no sense at all. Now you accuse me of being a “ChiCom”? On what basis? Find anything, ever, in my posts sympathetic to the CCP or communism. You will find the opposite, FRiend.

You know nothing about me. I happen to have lived and worked in countries newly recovering from commie rule and I probably detest communism more than you do. I have seen first hand what it does to human beings.
