Actually he wasn’t born in 1947 and wouldn’t even have known about 228 until he was an adult when it stopped being illegal to talk about it.
228 is more a reason Taiwanese hate the Chinese who took over after Japan’s surrender. 228 was a purge of Taiwanese over months after the Feb 288 incident. 20 - 40 thousand Taiwanese disappeared after midnight knocks on the door.
Of course he wasn’t born yet in 1947. All we know is he had had bad memories from childhood. Just because no one could talk about it publicly, it doesn’t follow that the islanders didn’t express their resentment in other ways.
It was a terrible time for the islanders. It probably wasn’t exactly a fun time for children born to the hated mainlanders, even though those children had committed no crimes.
The Japanese camps for Allied POWs on Taiwan were horrific. Senior wardens/tormentors were Japanese, junior prison guards/tormentors were Taiwanese.
Nobody was lily white and all-good.
