MELBOURNE, Australia — If the United States had the same COVID death rate as Australia, about 900,000 lives would have been saved. The Texas grandmother who made the perfect pumpkin pie might still be baking. The Red Sox-loving husband who ran marathons before COVID might still be cheering at Fenway Park.
For many Americans, imagining what might have been will be painful. But especially now, at the milestone of 1 million deaths in the United States, the nations that did a better job of keeping people alive show what Americans could have done differently and what might still need to change.
Many places provide insight: Japan, Kenya, Norway. But Australia offers perhaps the sharpest comparisons with the American experience. Both countries are English-speaking democracies with similar demographic profiles. In Australia and in the United States, the median age is 38. Roughly 86% of Australians live in urban areas, compared with 83% of Americans.
Yet Australia’s COVID death rate sits at one-tenth of America’s, putting the nation of 25 million people (with around 7,500 deaths) near the top of global rankings in the protection of life.
Australia’s location in the distant Pacific is often cited as the cause for its relative COVID success. That, however, does not fully explain the difference in outcomes between the two countries, since Australia has long been, like the United States, highly connected to the world through trade, tourism and immigration. In 2019, 9.5 million international tourists came to Australia.
So what went right in Australia and wrong in the United States?
For the standard slideshow presentation, it looks obvious: Australia restricted travel and personal interaction until vaccinations were widely available, then maximized vaccine uptake, prioritizing people who were most vulnerable before gradually opening up the country again.

It’s such nonsensical comparison.
trump tried to stop travel to the US at the beginning, but liberals cried RACIST!
Also, I don’t care if the article’s premise is correct (it’s clearly not, but if I were to concede). The FedGov has no authority, Constitutional or otherwise, to institute any kind of lockdown of its citizens.
“My generation learned one simple truth: Government and their “experts” LIE”
Reminds me of a Scripture:
“Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods (earthly rulers)? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? No, in heart you work unrighteousness; On earth you weigh out the violence of your hands.”—Psalm 58

They didn’t use remdesivir down there which killed most of the Americans.
Exactly. Apples and oranges. The data are corrupted.
RE: B.S.
Please elaborate. Anybody can write and say B.S. Explaining WHY is difficult.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is about to find out the consequences of telling his people:
“vaccination will make you free”
when the voters cast their ballots next Saturday.
It’s a ranked choice system that steers people to the major parties at the end of the list but it will break 8-10 percent against his party in favor of the main opposition party (Labor) his party (Liberal-National) won by 3 last time around.
We do not know how many Americans were killed by covid since the statistic was obscured by bribing hospitals to list deaths as covid deaths whenever possible. When you pay for junk science you get crap data. We know its very inflated, but sadly we don't know the real figure.
Secondly Australia is surrounded by ocean and shut down its border. This was far easier to do than it is in America. When Trump tried to restrict travel from other countries over concern of covid-19 he was certainly not praised by the crowd that is now pushing the big pharma version of "the science". Rather he was blocked from effectively doing so.
Now of course Australia shutting down its border delayed when the sars-cov-2 virus would become ubiquitous. It is already ubiquitous in most countries and is now becoming ubiquitous there. We don't know what percentage of the population will eventually be killed by it, but God willing it will be lower since the now dominant strain is the Omicron variant which is less potent in its negative symptoms.
So the article is, well, stupid.
Average Vitamin D levels (for white people) absolutely have to be higher in Australia than U.S., just based upon sunlight levels.
Ok, I don’t believe it for the following reasons:
Australians are predominantly of European ancestry.. was their genetic makeup analyzed as a reason for the differences?
Americans are generally obese and pre-diabetic due to their crappy diets... was this examined as a possible reason for the difference in outcomes?
Was blood type per population examined?
Was the difference in accounting methods for Covid deaths examined?
Aye.
As well as Psalm 2.
And Psalm 147:2
“Put not your trust in rulers,
nor in any child of earth,
for there is no help in them.”
Complete nonsense. Australia is a sparsely populated wasteland that is remote from everywhere else with relatively easily controllable borders. Very few points of comparison with the US.
COVID was even more politicized than AIDS.
Can’t trust ANY statistics.
Can’t trust the response or protocols here or there.
Never was at all to do with saving lives. It was always about gaining more power, control, and money.
Millions dying is NOT the problem. The problem is the wrong millions dying.
[[How Australia saved thousands of lives while COVID killed 1 million Americans]]
The left are using australia as their role model because they are trying to enact a word pandemic platform which will act in just the same degree of tyranny as Australia did- so expect to see a lot of glowing reports about how wonderful australia, new zealand etc were- by the feckless msm who are the howler monkeys for a one world government
The pizza shop which banked on "lunch hour" trade might still be open.
The hairdresser who had her own shop nearly full time might not be reduced to a part-time "chair renter"
The country Church might still be able to support full-time, full-service ministry.
Since we’re doing whataboutism—what about Sweden...well?
My Mother was 84 years old with horrible COPD. For her COVID was a modest headache that lasted all of 6 hours. For me, with my own significant risk factors, I was down for all of two days.
We just chose not to let the virus multiply in our bodies for days on end while waiting on testing and Dr's appointments and such. Within 6 hours of testing positive we had antibody treatments and began our horse-dewormer regimen.
Seemed a little easier than huddling in a corner for two years.
