Emigration: Americans flocked to these 10 cities last year — and none are in New York or California; Here are the country's top 10 moving destinations for 2021

Fewer Americans are moving than ever before, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data — but a new report says the people who are taking the plunge are flocking to some familiar cities.

Houston, Las Vegas and Phoenix topped this year's edition of truck rental company Penske's annual Top Moving Destinations report, which uses data from its one-way consumer truck rental reservations to compile a list of the country's 10 most popular cities for movers. More generally speaking, the Sun Belt led the way, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio also ranking highly.

Eight of the 10 cities made the list in 2020, creating some pandemic-era consistency. The two newcomers this year — Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina — reappeared after a five-year and three-year hiatus from the list, respectively.

Here are the country's top 10 moving destinations for 2021, according to Penske's report:

  1. Houston
  2. Las Vegas
  3. Phoenix
  4. Charlotte, North Carolina (which hasn't ranked in the top 10 since 2017)
  5. Denver
  6. San Antonio
  7. Dallas
  8. Orlando, Florida
  9. Austin, Texas
  10. Chicago (which hasn't ranked in the top 10 since 2015)

Penske says it's been compiling its annual list since 2010. U-Haul also publishes a similar report each year, using data from its own one-way rental customer transactions, most recently identifying the country's top states for movers as Tennessee, Texas and Florida.

The nation's drop in mover rate is historic: According to a March report from the U.S. Census Bureau, 8.4% of people changed residences in 2021, down from 9.3% in 2020. That's the lowest it's been since the Bureau started collecting this data in 1948, and less than half the rate from that inaugural year.

Interestingly, it's not a pandemic blip: The rate has either declined or held steady every year over the past five years.

I was at ABQ Sunport yesterday waiting for my flight in the area where the Texas departures were. I couldn’t believe the number of faggy hippie families and lesbians waiting for the Austin flight. Austin must be filled with queer Californians.

Yes, but CHICAGO in the top 10? *THAT* Chicago with daily killings?

Who say the ‘flockers’ were upstanding citizens? Chicago: land were no criminals are arrested and crimes are prosecuted.

I still haven't understood how my younger brother could attend UASF Basic Training and then go back to attend OTS at Medina Annex then retire there in San Antonio.   His wife is from Lufkin though.

After my USAF Basic I never wanted to see San Antonio again.

Twenty five years ago, my brother worked for a realty company in Ft Worth-Dallas.
He said lots of Californians were selling out, moving to FT Worth-Dallas and purchasing the same type home they had in Cali, and still had lots of money left over.

One sold his home in FT Worth and moved BACK to Cali because he said the lifestyle in that area was “too slow” for him.

i’ve lived in CA for my entire life. During it’s glory days of real Republican leadership under Reagan, Deukmejian, and Wilson it was paradise on earth. Once the Dem psychos gained control of the legislature it’s been an express elevator to hell.
My family and I are thankfully moving to Texas next month and can’t wait to see this $41thole state disappear in the rear view mirror. We will be bringing our conservative values and help keep Texas red!

Well, well........ good for you.

Become a Texan. Do not remain a transplant

My DIL’s sister moved to Texas and could never get the hang of being a Texan. She was miserable and at a considerable loss, moved back to NC

I am thrilled that my state, South Carolina, isn’t on this list. I am thrilled that my county, Aiken, isn’t on lists like this.

Lots of folks moving to Florida - it would be nice if U-Haul would ask if people want to self - identify by political party.

Here's praying Florida's getting Republicans. NOT democrats.

They HAVE to be talking about metro Chicago, the collar suburbs.
Because there’s no way in Hell people are moving to one of the 77 neighborhoods in the actual city.

Guess they don't want Beetlejuice as their mayor...
