The state of New York said it will prioritize non-White people in the distribution of COVID-19 treatments in short supply.
New York’s Department of Health released a document detailing their plan to distribute the treatments, such as monoclonal antibody treatment and antiviral pills.
The plan includes a section on eligibility for the scarce antiviral pills that people must meet to receive the treatment, including a line stating a person needs to have "a medical condition or other factors that increase their risk for severe illness."
One such "risk factor" is being a race or ethnicity that is not White due to "longstanding systemic health and social inequities"
"Non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor, as longstanding systemic health and social inequities have contributed to an increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19," the memo reads.
The Empire State's plan received backlash online for discriminating based on ethnicity and skin color.

Yes, non-whites have increased risk of severe illness. Because they have higher rates of diabetes, higher rates of obesity, higher rates of hypertension, etc. Their higher rates of vitamin D deficiency likely also a factor.

The correct way to allocate these scarce medicines is to prioritize those with the highest risk factors (health condition, age, etc.). Allocating according to race is not only silly, it’s criminally insane. Not to mention racist.

Where are the justice department, the courts, etc. to put a stop to this? Imagine if they said they were going to prioritize people of non-color first? Maybe if they were to suggest prioritizing for US citizens first, that would be OK. Condition any treatment of non-citizens to include deporting them

Pretty easy, ask if they’re getting public assistance or if they have a criminal record or if they’re illegal. It may be a broad stereotype, but I bet that would cover most.
