The weapons supplier for “Rust” told investigators he may have mistakenly provided the live ammunition that killed the cinematographer and wounded the director during a shooting on set near Santa Fe early last month.
Authorities say movie star Alec Baldwin was practicing a cross draw in an old church on the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set when he discharged a live round from a Colt .45 revolver, killing Halyna Hutchins, 42, and wounding Joel Souza, 48.
“No charges have been filed as of this date,” Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Juan Rios said Tuesday.
Seth Kenney, owner of PDQ Arm & Prop, told Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputies he may have given reloaded ammunition to the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed – who loaded the gun – before the Oct. 21 shooting, according to court records.
The father of Gutierrez-Reed, well-known armorer Thell Reed, told deputies he supplied Kenney with live rounds for firearms training with actors during a separate movie shoot out of state and Kenney took the ammunition back to New Mexico with him.
On Tuesday, deputies were in the process of executing a search warrant on Kenney’s business in a strip mall in Northeast Albuquerque.
Prop Master Sarah Zachry told deputies the ammunition for “Rust” was provided by Kenney, by Gutierrez-Reed from a previous production and “extra rounds from an individual identified as ‘Billy Ray.'”
Deputies found other suspected live ammunition on the set during a search and Kenney told them he got his ammunition from Starline Brass.

Where did they source .45 Colt ammo? I’ve heard that stuff is unobtainium.
Right!? What good is an armorer if they can’t differentiate ammunition? This was negligence in their part. No production team will cut safety corners after this this.
Baldwin in search of a fall guy. There is no excuse for Baldwin’s failure to properly handle a weapon as if it were loaded, period. Lock him up for he is an adult responsible for his own actions.
The armorer on set should have known the difference.
This is complete horse manure. I’ve shot blank rounds in five or six different calibers. They always had either a crimped case mouth, or a wad or plug of wax or paper composition that did not protrude beyond the case mouth. They never were charged with anything remotely similar in appearance to a jacketed or non-jacketed bullet. You could teach a six year old to distinguish between them. A qualified armorer would be able to tell them apart from 10 feet away.
Obviously, so called professional and trained personnel cannot be trusted with guns and ammunition.
What firearms dealer in good conscience could sell ammunition to someone who worked in television or movies? They may be the safest customer but they’re likely to turn it over to an idiot; whether actor, actress, or staff.
Thank you
Even if you confirm a gun is unloaded, there’s no excuse for pointing it at someone and pulling the trigger
wow
the lawyers are busy
This is bullsh*t.
No one with any passing familiarity with firearms mistakes live rounds for dum-dums.
This story is meant to give “talking points” to limp wristed commies who don’t know the difference between a flint lock and 9mil. Its not a news story.
It doesn’t matter where they got the ammo.
They should have had a weapons expert on the job. That sort
of person would never have okayed a live round.
corrdct
it doesn’t absolve anyone on set of their responsibilities regarding checking and clearing the rounds being used in the firearms
Agree, why else have an armorer?
I am guessing Bill Cosby did this.
Or maybe Vince Foster. I know ...
If you have some more theories this is the place to put ‘em up./cynic
Yeah sure, lots of reasons but NO EXCUSES!
“Anyone but a Hollywood star would be under arrest by now.”
Anyone who points and discharges a firearm at someone is responsible for the action, whether it is unloaded, or loaded. They are responsible if it is a rubber band gun. If in the process of this action a piece of the gun had broken off and injured her in any way, he would be responsible.
There is no other reason for his action. His state of mind at that point, I suspect, was to frighten or intimidate her... or at least, to annoy her.
Doesn’t really matter if the ammo fell from the sky. He did the pointing.
Is pointing a weapon, even in the context of a movie set, considered reckless if not called for in the script?
And once his actions left the script by pulling the trigger, isn’t that at the very least assault?
No charges.
He is responsible for the deaths. Criminally. Negligence.
He got preferential treatment.
The armorer on set should have known the difference
/\
The big chunk of lead
hanging out the end
didn’t give the live round away ?
B.S.
Ever notice how the left’s lies never get smaller
or more believable ?
only bigger
and less believable ?
It’s like they try and pick a fight.
MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.
This albatross doesn’t hang around the neck of the supplier, it hangs around the neck of whoever loaded live rounds into a stage prop, and is shared by the actor who didn’t check that the prop was safe.
Misdirection. Bringing real ammo on site was stupid and he ought to be out of industry for that.
But, that Ahole ABaldwin is responsible. Practicing a draw is one thing. Not checking during practice for actual rounds is quite another. He deserves time — he is supposed to be a professional. Professionals have legal responsibilities.
