After spending the past 20 years fighting for his life on death row, Julius Jones' sentence was commuted to life without the possibility of parole hours before he was scheduled to be executed, according to the Oklahoma governor's office.
"After prayerful consideration and reviewing materials presented by all sides of this case, I have determined to commute Julius Jones' sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole," Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said in a statement released Thursday.
Last week, a federal appeals court rejected Jones' final appeal, which meant the decision to spare his life lay only with Stitt, who accepted the parole board's recommendation to grant Jones clemency. Jones' execution date was slated for Nov. 18.
In September, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board recommended Stitt commute Jones' sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Stitt said at the time he was waiting for a clemency hearing to make a decision.

Political prisoners, on the other hand...
I believe Julius is guilty and that he deserved the death penalty. But the Gov. of OK has commuted his sentence, so oh well. I’m sorry for the victims family. Not sure how they feel about this. Sad.
There was an eyewitness to the shooting and it occurred in front of the victims two young daughters. If the govenor was so sure of his innocence, why is he still in jail?
That means he’ll be back out on the streets in a few years.
Hey if a black kills a white it’s a misdemeanor any more.
And they can change it again because of overcrowding or he doesn’t like his dessert.
I do not know....
I know in my heart...there are plenty of folks...if I was their Judge I'd throw the book at them..and hanging would be on the table.
Cause he might get the rona!
A lot of people don’t believe in the death penalty.
Not sufficient. Needs to be in solitary confinement.
I don’t have a big problem with this. I *do* have a big problem with broadcast media influence on public perceptions and the stupidity fomented by decades of public school follies.
Yeah.
there is a clear movement in this country to basically allow them to do anything with little to no consequence unless ..idk..it’s their 30th offense.
Governor Stitt screws up again. If he thinks Jones is innocent from evidence provided after the trial (I don’t) then be man enough to pardon him. If on the other hand he thinks Jones is guilty then what business does he have overriding the wishes of a jury? He’s just pandering to people who won’t vote for him anyway.
Governor Gutless.
Electing liberals comes with a cost. How long before he makes parole? The big step to free him has been taken. The rest of the steps are going to be a lot smaller.

Local news reported a compromise had been made.

That’s not what a life sentence without the possibility of parole means 🤪
