The classical composer who died almost 300 years ago, has been at the centre of a race debate for over a century; but does this mean we should disturb his grave?
German singer, Roberto Blanco, has called on the Mayor of Vienna to exhume Beethoven’s body for a racial DNA test.
The request is the latest in an over century old debate about the ethnicity of the German-born classical music giant. Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827, and Blanco addresses the city’s Mayor in a public YouTube video. He states his reasoning for the ask is ‘so that we can see if he looks more like you or me.’
Blanco, who is of Afro-Cuban origin, was born in Tunisia, before moving to Germany and becoming a singer in the early 50s.
The 84-year-old beloved singer has recorded multiple hit albums and appeared on a number of music variety shows.
Why is Beethoven’s ethnicity an issue?
While the question of Beethoven’s race has been in question for over a century, the theory regarding his ethnicity resurfaced in 2015.
A student-run Minnesota newspaper, The Concordian, had suggested a “white-washing” of the composer’s legacy, citing descriptions of the composer as having a “wide, thick-lipped mouth, short, thick nose, and proudly arched forehead”.
Also known as cultural whitewashing, “white-washing” in this context is the practice where historians, artists, and other documenters highlight ‘white’ as the primary and dominant race, consequently pushing or entirely removing ethnic minorities from the record.

Just face facts already: white people are smarter.
Grave. Stupid autocorrect.
“Rest in peace.” means nothing to the woke crowd.
I've got a better idea that I'll keep to myself.

Tell Tchaikovsky the news
I’m sure there are hairs or other material from him around that they could perform DNA on without digging his decayed carcass up.

Um, someone needs to learn math. Since he died in 1827, it hasn't even been 200 years ago since he died. This is 2021, not 2121. 😋
2021 - 1827 = almost 300 (actually 194). New math
Look at Queen Nefertiti from 1370 BC. Sure looks white (or at least Middle Eastern) to me. My guess is that when agriculture was started in the Mesopotamian region in pre-history, a bunch of people from there went exploring and found rich farmland in the Nile valley, and killed off any hunter-gatherers who might have been there.
Was the cause of death COVID?
“Who cares what race he was? He made great music - just like Michael Jackson did and just like John Lennon did.”
I agree with your point, but, with regard to Ludwig Von, the late Messieurs Wacko Jacko and the Pudgy Beatle can only wish to have been “just like”.
Hmmm, there may be another explanation...
A very good friend of mine had those features. Almost everyone thought he was Hispanic. His parents and other siblings were all blonde haired and blue eyed germans.
He was raised in L.A. and told the story of his brother getting married to a Hispanic gal. The bride’s family had never met the groom so they came up to Lyle and congratulated him. He said he wasn’t the groom and told them it was the white guy over there...
I have two relative‘s graves that I want to dig up for DNA. The first is in my great great grandparents grave site. Next my gg grandparents‘ graves is one with a significant tombstone and on it is written „a colored man“ and his name which was similar to my gg grandfather. Bear in mind he was born in 1807 so probably died before he was emancipated. He and my gg grandfather were born in the same place in Tennessee and both died in Texas.
The other grave is my great great grandmother. Her youngest son, my great grandfather, was born when she was 50 in Ireland. I suppose that‘s possible but more likely is that she‘s the stepmother and they listed her as mother on the ship from Ireland during the potato famine. So I just want to know whether I‘m related to her.
