It means that if the ads don’t get enough viewers the advertisers are due free ad time until the numbers are reached.

Get woke; go broke.

I’d boycott any advertisers I saw on the Olympics, but then I’d have to watch the Olympics. So I guess they’re safe.

I couldn’t care less for the Olympics this time around and I don’t plan on watching any of it. I sincerely hope NBC loses big money on their woke garbage.

“Maybe NBC will fail and die.”

The Feds would bail them out first. A bunch of public service announcements or subsidizing companies to air ads.

RE: Some of this may also be due to the time differential between Japan and the US.

Did they have the same ad problem when the Olympics were held in Sydney and Beijing?

ESAD, NBC, the USOC and, particularly, the advertisers.

Here's how I understand it works:

NBC charges $X for a typical 30-second ad spot in 2021. Let's say the network's average viewership for a prime-time TV program is 1 million households.

NBC charges 10 times $X for a 30-second ad spot for the 2021 Olympics, based on the expectation that this programming will generate 10 million viewers instead of the normal 1 million.

If NBC only gets 2 million viewers instead of the projected 10 million, then the advertisers demand to get a refund of 80% of the ad fees they paid to NBC. Instead of shelling out cash refunds, NBC agrees to give them 8 free ad spots later in 2021 for each one they purchased during the Olympics -- to make up for the 8 million "missing" Olympic viewers.

The Olympics are often a major cash drain on the countries where they are held. Thus, you had Denver and Lillehammer, both winter sports meccas, in public votes turn down the Winter Olympics even though the latter had the facilities in place from an earlier Olympics. That attitude seems to be spreading to the Summer Olympics with only China being enthusiastic to get it and that due to its potential to showcase the fascist state.

Every report I’ve seen on these TV ratings indicates that the ratings are the lowest since 1988 — when the Olympics were held in South Korea. So I’m sure the time differential is a big part of it.

Peacock Network's costly event shed 49% of viewers from 2016 Rio Games

NBC's primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics continued to spiral downward on Monday, averaging 14.7 million viewers for a 49% drop compared to the equivalent night from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Excellent news!

NBC = Comcast = Domestic American enemy

Comcast is a more dangerous American enemy than Russia or China or Iran.

Some of this may also be due to the time differential between Japan and the US.

There is time difference between the UK and the US too, yet ratings did not collapse in 2012 when the Olympics were held in London did they?

Something else to keep in mind is the time of year when these Olympic games are held.

The 2000 Olympics in Sydney didn't even start until mid-September, which kind of makes sense because the seasons are six months off in the Southern Hemisphere and you'd have to hold the Summer Olympics in January and February down there for it to really be "summer."

The Seoul Olympics were also held in September -- apparently due to concerns about the peak summer heat season there. I never thought that would be a major concern in South Korea, but I guess it can get very hot there in July and August.

It's one thing to stage events 5+ hours ahead of our time when people might be watching a night event in London during the late afternoon hours in North America.

When you're 10+ hours off, you have millions of people in North America who are SLEEPING while those events are held.

I had it on the other night for a few minutes. Some male synchronized diving or something. One of the competitors, apparently a gay man from Great Britain... I am thinking “OK whatever”, thinking that probably many of the athletes are homosexual.

But if they said it once, they said it 20 times, that this one had a husband. Nothing was said about whether any of the other athletes maybe had wives or girlfriends. It was like this person was a special hero for being married to another man, and they have a child.

I think, no matter how “tolerant” you are, you just hit a limit of that kind of programming content.

JMHO

“The commercials are nauseating”

You said it, and so is most of the regular programming.
