Florida might as well be known as the sixth borough.

New data from the Sunshine State’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offers the latest glimpse of just how many New Yorkers fled south during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At least 33,565 New Yorkers exchanged their NY drivers licenses for Florida credentials between September 2020 and March 2021. That’s a 32% increase from the same period the prior year, when 25,370 New York driver’s licenses were traded for Florida ones.

I feel bad for Florida.

Each one of these people fled the politics. Each will bring those exact same politics with them.

Even right wing. I left the northeast in disgust.. even at my own father who was very tight wing and voted straight Republican his whole life. He never questioned it.

There are what I call “but republicans”.

They believe in the second amendment.. but..

They believe in the 1st amendment.. but..

They believe that life begins at conception.. but..

This could be bad if they keep voting for what they fled, which many of them do.

As a full time Florida resident who loves our state and definitely or Governor- I have to say to any person from the NE moving to Florida. We welcome you to our slice of paradise. Not only is the weather delightful - but the employment picture, the booming real estate market, the low taxes, etc. etc. makes our State a desired place. One word of caution to anyone from the NE area..............you are welcome - your $$ is welcome. What is NOT welcome is bringing any of your leftist/liberal political ideas to our state. In short - if this is what you believe - YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN FL.

I know some NYC transplants to FL. They may enjoy the Sunshine State, but they also still love to vote Democratic.

Two years ago Ted Cruz faced a very close election here in Texas due to hundreds of millions of outside money poured into Texas to oppose Senator Cruz. It at that time was the most expensive Senatorial election in history.

As many fled California due to its total mismanagement there was fear they could be the tipping point against Cruz. Post election analysis was odd. They left California due to the fact they no longer had those political values of past. They voted for Ted Cruz not massively but more than less. They actually helped Ted Cruz.

Yup, it’ll start with HOAs, then onto electing city government to put city ordinances in place, then onto county etc and pretty soon a big chunk of FL is voting dem.

My mo-in-law is originally from NY and her family moved to FL when she was a teen. She lived in Dunedin, FL when I met my wife. She was head of the HOA for a while and in 2008, went to an obama rally. She’s also a control freak. Brought all that leftist crap with her as a teen.

New York continues to be a top destination for foreign immigrants. Also, not in past 12 months given COVID, but over the decade there’s a meaningful inflow of young people from other states (domestic migration, if you will) to NYC to start careers in law, finance, media and fashion, which partially offsets the move of older people to lower tax / better weather locales.

Last I knew the outflow was so great even incoming illegals weren’t making up for it.

At least not when the census was taken....

I am sure there is movement of folks from the Northeast to Florida, no doubt.

I also know folks in the northeast who have relatives that reside in Florida and switch their legal residence and drivers licenses to Florida. The non-resident tax on their New York or New Jersey income is less than the resident tax. Working from home makes that easier as well; there is no “going into the office” regardless of where the office is.

The trick is getting someone else as the owner or lease holder on the place they actually live. Without doing that and without getting regular mail NOT sent to where they are actually living, the tax sleuths in New York or New Jersey are likely to discover the ruse and deny the filing of tax reports as a “non-resident”.
